1-13-2017, Autoblog -- 2016 was full of talk of autonomy, but little action beyond crazy, futuristic concept cars and announcement after announcement from automakers. If this year's CES is any indication, 2017 is going to focused on connectivity. More than that, CES showed that traditional barriers between automakers are breaking down in favor of universal and open source technology standards that will benefit both consumers and developers.
CES, traditionally a showcase for the latest and greatest technology and gadgets like flat-screen refrigerators or televisions that broadcast in the fifth dimension, has become so intwined with the auto industry that we at Autoblog cover it like any other auto show. At every CES event I attended and nearly every booth I went to, there was some talk, display, or demonstration of how cars will connect to your phone and your home, and eventually each other.
It seems we're heading toward the tech singularity where all devices work under one cohesive ecosystem – the Internet of Things, if you like. The difference between autonomy and connectivity is how real the latter feels because so much of the connected tech on display at CES is either here already or will be here by the end of the year. There were dozens of demos, both big and small, that allowed us to test and explore what's on the horizon.
Bridging the gap between home and car, Ford is integrating the Amazon Alexa personal assistant straight into its vehicles. That means you'll be able to talk to Alexa in your car just like you would through an Echo or Dot at home. It also means you can shop on Amazon by voice while you're driving (since that wasn't convenient enough already). Samsung is developing smartwatch applications for Ford, BMW, and others. Toyota is adopting Ford's SmartDeviceLink smartphone connectivity system for its vehicles. That means developers can have one app that works across multiple infotainment systems.
The Linux Foundation is developing an open-source operating system that will be free to use, making it easier for developers to connect smartphones and apps across multiple manufacturers' systems. Automotive Grade Linux, or AGL, is available for download right now. Major automakers like Toyota and Daimler (who usually are set on competing with one another) are partnering to further the development of the project. Bosch, Hyundai, and Chrysler showed connected car concepts at CES that preview the future of automobiles.

Vehicle-specific, weather-resistant systems include reverse-gear cross traffic alert
SOUTHFIELD, MICH., January 16, 2017 (MEDIAWIRE) – Brandmotion LLC announced it has begun shipping its Radar Blind Spot system, RBDS-1400, to retailers nationwide. The system was introduced at the 2016 SEMA show in Las Vegas. Paired with vehicle-specific mounting brackets, the RBDS-1400 gives aftermarket retailers the ability to sell an Original Equipment system that is proven to reduce accidents while driving and maneuvering.

The RBDS-1400 (MSRP $729.95) consists of a central processor and two radar sensors that are installed behind the bumper at the rear corners of the vehicle. Within the cabin, blind spot warning indicators are installed on the A-pillars. The system begins monitoring above 15 miles per hour. If it senses a vehicle in the blind spot, it illuminates the indicator light, and will further emit an audible tone if the turn signal is applied while a vehicle is in the blind spot.
Because radar sensors are used rather than side-mounted cameras, they are completely hidden from view and do not affect the vehicle exterior appearance in any way. Also, they are not affected by bad weather.
In addition to blind spot monitoring, the RBDS-1400 includes an aftermarket industry exclusive cross-traffic monitoring system. Activated when the vehicle is put into reverse gear, the system warns the driver with an audible alert and indicator light if it senses vehicles, people or other objects that may cross behind the vehicle while it is backing up.
The RDBS-1400 must be combined with vehicle-specific mounting kits for the sensors. EPSILON ELECTRONICS BOOTH ROBBED DURING CES SHOW INCLUDING NEW PATENT PENDING DOUBLE-SCREEN UNIT
Montebello, CA (January 10, 2017) – The Epsilon Electronics booth was robbed of 7 units during the recent CES Show in Las Vegas. Among the units stolen Sunday evening were two conceptualized units, which have yet to go on sale to the public.
“We are taking this situation very seriously,” said Vice President, Sales and Marketing for Epsilon Electronics Inc., Paul Goldberg. “We are working closely with local authorities and Las Vegas Convention Center staff to make sure the perpetrators are brought to justice.”
"The targeted theft of prototypes suggests that the purpose is to copy our hard work and compromise our investment in product development,” Goldberg continued. “Whoever is to blame represents the very lowest level of integrity in our business and must be stopped."
In light of this situation, Epsilon is offering a reward of $10,000 for information leading to the capture and conviction of those involved.
While seven units were stolen overall, the most valuable unit was the Soundstream VRN-DD7HB dual-screen source unit. This unit has garnered a great deal of notoriety in conjunction with the CES Show in the media and on social media. This unit is due to be released to the public in March and is patent-pending.
The units stolen appear to have been targeted given that they were newer models, two of which debuted at CES.
As a result of the robbery, the Epsilon Electronics suffered not only loss of property, but damage to their booth as well. The image below depicts the Epsilon booth as it was discovered on the morning of Monday, January 9.

1-10-2017, Mobile Electronics, January 2017 -- Choosing a career path isn't always a choice you make alone. Sometimes the world, other people, or possibly fate, intervene to shine the light on a new path.
Bill Goldberg began his career tackling professional football players on the field for the Atlanta Falcons, but due to a serious knee injury, he turned to the world of professional wrestling and began tackling, or "spearing," his opponents on the way to becoming one of the most popular stars to ever grace the squared circle. Ronald Reagan began his career as an actor but got bitten by the political bug and began speaking on behalf of General Electric, which started him on his path to becoming President of the United States. Each path illustrates something many people have in common: While you don't always land in your first choice of careers, sometimes a similar, yet better option is right around the corner.
Ric Moore is such a person, having started his career working in music production in 1985. "My background was live sound. I've always been interested in music. I'm one of the baby boomers that grew up on classic rock. I bought all the albums and knew all the songs by heart," Moore said. "I got involved with a guy that was in a band. He had a board that I learned on the fly."
To enhance his knowledge of live sound, Moore moved to Atlanta, attending a trade school called Music Business Institute. There, he learned about artist management, video production and audio production. "I made some pretty good friends, went on tour with a band called The Producers. I was stage manager and did guitar tuning, set up and tear down, keyboard setup and tear down," Moore said. "After the tour, I moved back to Evansville. The music scene was okay. I ran into a couple guys I knew locally, ran sound for some local bands. That's when the transition happened in 1988. I was 27."
Realizing your dream job isn't panning out might send some people running into a safe office job somewhere, but not Moore. Thanks to a tip from his wife's cousin about a local 12-volt shop being in need of a salesman, Moore soon found opportunity in an unlikely place.
"The opportunity presented itself to work at this local car stereo shop. I knew what car stereo was from doing it with a buddy in Atlanta. It wasn't something I wanted to do at first," Moore said. "This store was looking for a sales person. My wife's cousin worked here and he got me on as a salesman. I got hooked on the business and was fairly successful at it. I found out that was my niche."
Soon enough, Moore's niche became a passion and he had found his new path. And as fate would have it, there was one particular sale that sealed the deal for his new chosen career path.
"The one memory I've always had was the first big sale. We were a little shotgun retail center in a four-shop strip mall. I had been working there a month or so," Moore said. "A guy came in, I helped him out, went through the whole process. He spent a thousand dollars. Right then I knew I could do this. The owner called me and said it was the biggest sale we had in a while. Recently, that same customer came back to the store and we recognized each other immediately. It was pretty great."
Early Battles
After working for Dr. Dashboard for around seven years, Moore decided it was time to make his passion permanent and found opportunity when the company began selling off locations to other employees.
"[The owner] sold one store to the store manager in Terre Haute [Indiana]. My wife's cousin bought the store in Owensboro [Kentucky]. I didn't think he would sell me the Evansville store because it was kind of a cash cow," Moore said. "I asked him if he would have a problem with me moving to Paducah, Kentucky and opening a shop there. Or he could sell me the store. The process took about a year, but he sold me the store."
Thanks to help from his parents and generous loans from a local bank (a product of decent credit and the times), Moore began the process of remodeling the shop to his liking, adding new carpet, tools and a new counter, among other things. The shop remained open during the remodel, which may have been a mistake, according to Moore. "We did less than a $100 on our first day. After we got the remodeling done, business continued to grow."
Today, after moving twice to accommodate its growing business, the company now operates within a 6,900 square foot facility. As of June 2016, the facility has grown by 1,400 square feet due to an added install bay space used mainly for larger vehicles like boats, RVs and semi-trucks. The showroom features curved counters and WinTech displays, which Moore purchased prior to that company's demise.

1-9-2017 -- Known as the largest electronics show on the planet, CES provides an opportunity for new innovation at the start of each year. This year, it did not dissapoint, providing a place for mobile electronics manufacturers to showcase new ideas to eager retailers and industry insiders.
This year's event took place at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) and featured some potential game changers for many companies. With a packed show floor, visitors from all over the world were able to see innovations that could affect them more than they know.
Perhaps the biggest innovation that many companies are developing products for, is the concept of OEM integration with an enhancement of sound quality. Kenwood has released its XR600-6DSP (MSRP $800), a six-channel power plant that, through partnership with Automotive Data Solutions (ADS), upgrades select factory audio systems by supplanting, rather than supplementing the factory amplifier.
Sony displayed a demo vehicle featuring its RSXGS9 hi-resolution single-DIN head unit, which was reflective of where many car audio companies are going this year. This is largely thanks to a renewed interest in high quality sound from their customers. JL Audio, which again showcased off-site at the Palms Hotel and Casino, displayed its highly publicized C7 component speakers as part of this focus on quality sound. Attendees of the company's display were able to sit in a chair in the middle of a sound room to hear the speakers close-up. The C7 project was led by CEO and Chief Engineer, Lucio Proni, with a mission to create the finest-ever JL Audio component speakers.
Back at LVCC, but away from the North Hall, was Alpine, back in the mix with a new, innovative head unit, the iLX-107, an aftermarket in-dash receiver with wireless Apple CarPlay. The device utilizes direct Wi-Fi instead ofBlutooth to connect iPhones to the receiver, making it the first to market with the concept.
On the safety side, imageNEXT has parterned with American Road Products to bring OmniDRIVE, a connected car safety product, to the aftermarket in North America. The device that integrates 360º surround view monitoring (SVM) and blind spot cameras with a 5-channel DVR with optional dash-cam or driver cam that can be connected with wi-fi to portable devices in a vehicle. The product will be available for purchase through American Road Products. Shipping is scheduled for the end of March, tentatively.
While some years bear few significant developments, this year's CES and Las Vegas showcase proved the aftermarket is an exciting place to be, one that is finding new ways to both compete and surpass the OEM presence.

The C7 project was led by CEO and Chief Engineer, Lucio Proni, with a mission to create the finest-ever JL Audio component speakers. To achieve this, he established clear performance goals and assigned the engineering resources necessary to specify and develop each C7 speaker as a clean-sheet design.

The C7 component woofer’s dust cap went through ten prototype generations before arriving at the solution that resulted in the smoothest response and the best mechanical integrity. You will not find a passive crossover network in the C7 line. This is a completely deliberate omission. The designers assumed that systems built with C7 speakers would avoid technical compromises, so they designed the C7 speakers with active crossovers in mind. These duties will typically be handled by a high quality DSP, such as JL Audio’s TwK™ 88, or D8.

Torrance, Calif. (Jan. 5, 2017) — Alpine Electronics of America, Inc. has introduced the iLX-107, an aftermarket in-dash receiver dedicated to wireless Apple CarPlay. The iLX-107 with 7-inch touch screen will be available for North America and gives drivers an even more convenient way to use Apple CarPlay in their vehicle. The iLX-107 debuted at the 2017 International CES taking place Jan. 5-8 at the Las Vegas Convention Center and was awarded with a CES Innovations Award for outstanding design and engineering in the In-Vehicle Audio/Video category.
“Apple CarPlay has been one of the most popular features with our customers and will gain even more fans with the wireless option,” said Steve Crawford, vice president and general manager, Alpine Electronics of America, Inc. “We are excited to deliver the iLX-107 to provide drivers with a seamless transition of their iPhone use in and out of the vehicle without having to connect a cable.”
The iLX-107 is an AM/FM receiver with a 7-inch WVGA capacitive touch screen and LED backlighting for bright visibility. Wireless Apple CarPlay lets iPhone users make and receive calls, access text messages, play music, and get directions optimized for traffic conditions in a way that allows them to stay focused on the road. Apple CarPlay is accessed through the iLX-107’s touch screen or through Siri voice control, and the resulting music, driving directions and phone calls are played through the vehicle’s speaker system. Apple CarPlay is compatible with iPhone 5 and later, including iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and the latest version of iOS.
Once wireless Apple CarPlay has been set up, the iLX-107 will automatically search for and connect to the most frequently paired iPhone for all subsequent uses. Since the Apple CarPlay connection to the iLX-107 is wireless, there is no need to remove the iPhone from a pocket or purse to use it in the vehicle. The iLX-107 uses the 5 GHz WiFi band to optimize wireless connectivity performance.
The iLX-107 is compatible with the Alpine TuneIt® App, a free smartphone app that provides custom sound tuning for the iLX-107 and other Alpine audio systems. Other iLX-107 features include three (2V) preouts, one aux input, Alpine’s MediaXpander™ technology for improved playback of compressed media, and an input for a rear view camera system (camera system sold separately).
The iLX-107 retains select factory vehicle features when used with an iDatalink® Maestro® module (vehicle specific, sold separately). Users may also view customized vehicle information (selectable gauge screen, parking assist screen, etc.) on the 7-inch display. The retained features and customized information will vary by vehicle model.
System Expansion
Vehicle owners can also use the iLX-107 to control external accessories like a light bar, motorized tonneau cover, or winch when used with the optional KAC-001 External Accessory Controller ($250 SRI, sold separately). The KAC-001 works with up to eight relay-connected accessories which can be controlled from the iLX-107’s touch screen. A graphical icon and name can be assigned to each accessory for quick identification on the touch screen.

Las Vegas, Nev. (January 4, 2017) – Dual Electronics Corporation announced the introduction of 15 new marine audio electronics. A first time for Dual: marine media center and wakeboard tower speakers are joined by four new audio receivers, five receiver and speakers combo packs, one amplifier, two pairs of speakers, and a subwoofer. All models will be on display during the 2017 International CES in Booth 3721 in the North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, January 5-8, 2017. All products will ship by February 2017.

First for Dual – a Hide-Away Marine Media Center
Dual’s first Marine Media Center (MMC36BT, MSRP: $269.99) is a multi-function digital media receiver for boats and RVs. It features built-in Bluetooth connectivity for audio streaming (A2DP) with ID3 tag, AM/FM/WB tuner, direct USB control for iPod/iPhone devices, and a USB input for playback and charging (2.1A, 5V DC). It also offers 3-zone speaker control with programmable turn-on volume, so that everyone on a boat can enjoy music at the volume level they prefer. The three individual speaker zones are powered by a built-in 480-Watt amplifier delivering 60 Watts per channel (60Watts x 8). Other features include seven selectable EQ curves, 4V preamp outputs, zero current draw memory back-up, low battery indicator and a rear camera input (RCA). All the electronics, including the amplifier, are housed in a compact, black box that can be conveniently mounted out of sight, protected from the elements.
A separate 3.7” x 5.4” controller gives access to all functions of the media center. It features a 3” TFT full-color LCD, and connects to the black box with a 17-foot DIN cable. The controller can be mounted in-dash or any other convenient location. The controller is IPX6 waterproof, ASTM B117 salt spray exposure compliant, and ASTM D4329 UV exposure compliant, which makes it ideal for marine and RV applications. A free app is available for both Apple and Android devices, allowing the user to conveniently control the MMC, via Bluetooth, from their smartphone.
Gauge-Hole Mechless Receivers
Two new mechless receivers fit standard 3” gauge-hole openings in the boat’s console: MGH37BT (MSRP: $219.99) and MGH17BT (MSRP: $129.99). The MGH37BT model boasts a full graphic 3” LCD, direct USB control for iPod/iPhone devices and control of the Pandora radio app on an iPhone, built-in Bluetooth, AM/FM tuner with 7-channel NOAA weather band, zero current draw, memory retention, low battery indicator, and a 7-band EQ. Both models are IPX6 waterproof, ASTM B117 salt spray exposure compliant, and ASTM D4329 UV exposure compliant.
Built-in Bluetooth in All Receivers
All nine new receivers (two gauge-hole, two standalone and five in the combo packs) feature built-in Bluetooth technology. The gauge-hole receivers offer audio streaming and player control profiles (A2DP & AVRCP), while the rest of CD and mechless models also add HFP profile for hands-free calling from Bluetooth connected devices. This allows the user to conveniently integrate their smartphones and other media devices into the boat’s audio system, while keeping the devices hidden and protected from possible water splashes.
Built for Marine Use
The MMC36BT Marine Media Center, and the MGH37BT and MGH17BT gauge-hole receivers are IPX6 waterproof, ASTM B117 salt spray exposure compliant, and ASTM D4329 UV exposure compliant. All single DIN receivers include removable silicone covers to protect front panel 3.5mm AUX inputs from water splashes and debris, while the faceplate and other exposed elements are injection-molded using high-temperature UV-resistant resins to prevent weathering and breakdown from the sun. The chassis is wrapped in a tough, dirt and moisture-resistant layer of PET (polyethylene) while electrophoretically deposited paint (EDP) is applied to the chassis offering additional protection against corrosion. To protect the internal components, a transparent coating is applied to all circuit boards surfaces to guard against dust, corrosion and condensation – all to ensure maximum durability in marine and other outdoor environments.

Users choose between stylish flat face or variable illumination
LAS VEGAS – January 5, 2017 (MEDIAWIRE) – JVC Mobile Entertainment replaced its popular KD-R975BTS with the KD-R985BTS, and introduced the new KD-R988BTS to create a single-DIN flagship duo that provides two style options. Buyers can select complete variable illumination to match vehicle lighting, or take one-button simplicity in a new flat-face design. Besides this distinction, both models provide a similar user experience, including two new features that make listening to music a social event among passengers in the vehicle.

LAS VEGAS, January 5, 2017 (MEDIAWIRE) – KENWOOD is introducing its second dash camera at the 2017 CES. Joining the standalone, monitor-equipped DRV-410 is the DRV-N520, a smaller version that is intended to pair with the company’s new mech-less DMX7704S multimedia receiver.

The DRV-N520 features a high-resolution, wide-angle camera that records a three-megapixel (photo quality) image. Its small footprint minimizes window blockage, and recordings are stored on a removable eight-gigabyte SD card. In addition to its recording capabilities, the camera also measures distance and velocity between it and cars or obstacles in its view. Based on circumstances, it can trigger a collision warning to the driver if it senses an imminent impact, or notify the driver in stopped traffic if the vehicle in front of it has started moving.
As the DRV-N520 is not a standalone dash camera, its control, notifications and camera view are processed on the connected DMX7704S receiver. By using the in-dash touch screen, users can change recording modes, turn collision warning and delay departure notifications on or off, and set the camera display duration. Notifications are displayed on the screen as well.
Like the DRV-410, the DRV-N520 includes an internal G sensor to detect impact, and can be set to begin recording if the vehicle is struck while parked or otherwise unoccupied. All recordings can be played back through the DMX7704S touch screen.
