A Grassroots Goliath

Tucked inside its massive parent company, Sony Car Audio covers the country with trainings, support, sales and more to keep its dealer base satisfied and strong.

Words by Jamie Sorcher

The name speaks volumes. The Sony brand in the consumer electronics industry, and around the world, has always carried weight—and still does today. The Japanese company was founded in 1946 with only 20 employees and launched iconic products like the Walkman in 1979 and the world’s first compact CD player in 1982. While currently best known for its PlayStation and digital cameras, the mammoth company is regarded as a design trendsetter and desirable brand whether for TVs, computers or car stereos.

Nestled within this large conglomerate, which has its U.S. headquarters in San Diego, Calif., is a gem of grassroots operation. Sony Car Audio operates its tight-knit support team under the guidance of Distribution Sales Manager Anthony Tozzi who works remotely from New Jersey.

“We are a really unconventional business,” he said. “While Sony is this large company, car audio is just a small part of their business. One of the things we constantly say is ... Read the rest of the story HERE.

Mobile Solutions Provides Sony Technicians Custom Install Solutions

TEMPE, Ariz. -- June 23, 2021 -- Mobile Solutions announces the release of ST-SONY-KIT, a time-saving eight piece speaker template set designed and engineered specifically for the new Sony Mobile ES speaker line. Manufactured from durable black plastic and etched with the individual product IDs, each of the speakers in the Mobile ES lineup has two supporting templates; a baseplate template for the mounting surface/opening and a flush template for the speaker grille diameter to accommodate flush or recessed custom mounting. Sony Car Audio Distribution Sales Manager Anthony Tozzi said, “We are excited to be launching the new Sony Mobile ES speakers, and these templates ensure the best possibility for ease and accuracy of installation. Mobile Solutions creates great products, and these custom install templates for the four common speaker sizes in the current Sony Mobile ES lineup will help make the technician’s fabrication tasks easier for custom installations.”

“We engineered these templates to make installations of Sony Mobile ES speakers faster and more effective than having the technician create their own templating system,” said Bryan Schmitt, founder and CEO at Mobile Solutions. These days speed and efficiency are an important element in installation bays so that labor dollars and product performance is maximized. Certain innovations in the Sony Mobile ES speakers, such as the Separated Notch Edge Surround on the subwoofer and component 6.5” mean that optimal mounting surfaces using the baseplate template as a starting point are critical to allow the speaker’s optimal performance envelope. With the second precisely sized flush template, installation of grilles – either those included or if custom fabricated – is an easy way to protect the speaker and facilitate a more integrated appearance. “At the $99.99 price point, a retailer can easily make their investment on the templates back on the first component set or subwoofer install and feel confident the performance will not be negatively affected by the mounting arrangement” continued Schmitt.

Although made for the XS-162ES woofer in the 2-way component set, the template will also accommodate the Sony Mobile ES XS-160ES 2-way coaxial speaker. The XS-680ES is a 6x8” 2-way coaxial that is intended for factory locations, thereby not requiring a custom mounting template solution. “The folks at Sony Car Audio have been great to work with on this project and it’s exciting to see a manufacturer’s team go the extra step to help their retailers have the tools to be more efficient and accurate in their custom installation efforts. We think this is a great way to compliment the launch of this premium speaker line,” said Bryan Schmitt.

Sony Car Audio’s National Product Trainer, Kris Bulla, added, “We are excited to get back to in-person trainings and will be reminding technicians of these custom templates as we go through the design and detail of the speakers themselves during Sony Mobile ES product training throughout the country and at events like KnowledgeFest.” Bulla and fellow Sony Car Audio Tech Team members are scheduled to train thousands of installation technicians, sales professionals and retail car audio business owners this year.

ST-SONY-KIT Features:

  • Manufactured from durable 1/4" black plastic
  • Eight (8) piece total, two (2) templates per speaker size
  • Etched with precision alignment lines and product identification
  • Pre-positioned speaker mounting holes for accuracy and proper grille orientation
  • Made in Arizona USA!

Includes:

  • XS-W104ES 10” - Mounting Template and Flush Template

September 10, 2019 -- Sony has made several moves recently to improve territory coverage in the Northwest, Northeast and in Michigan. Davis Distribution, based in Newell, WV replaces Altron International as the distribution partner covering the state of Michigan. GoFast Solutions out of Middletown, CT replaces MRI Premium Distribution Services in the Northeast. And AM Merchandising expands North and replaces Custom Plus Distributors as the distributor in the greater Northwest. DAS Distributors takes over the entire state of New York to expand the northern portion of their territory. All four partners look to grow Sony sales and leverage their ability to serve retailers at a high level in their respective new territories.

“Growing Davis Distribution’s and DAS Distributors’ territories makes great sense for us because of the great service and support they provide their retailer partners. GoFast Solutions is a new business partner, but their team is familiar with us and how we go to market. Tom Miller’s team at AM Merchandising has proven to be a great partner in Northern California, so their growth into the Northwest was logical. Each will help serve our independent specialty retailers and grow our business in these markets,” said Anthony Tozzi, Distribution Sales Manager.
