The new system is for select Jeep Wranglers and offers control of external accessories
Torrance, Calif. (June 9, 2016) – Alpine Electronics of America, Inc. is now shipping the X109-WRA 9-inch Restyle dash system for 2011-up Jeep Wranglers. In addition to its audio, video, navigation, and Bluetooth functions, this product goes beyond the infotainment system by offering control of other Jeep accessories right from the touch screen.
“Alpine Restyle Dash systems with 9-inch touch screens are the largest aftermarket screens available for the Jeep Wrangler,” said Steve Crawford, vice president and general manager, aftermarket business unit, Alpine Electronics of America, Inc. “The new X109-WRA empowers Wrangler owners to use the system for more than just entertainment by controlling other accessories that are part of the Jeep lifestyle.”
The X109-WRA consists of the main unit featuring a 9-inch touch screen, a dash bezel specifically fitted for the Jeep Wrangler, and vehicle specific wiring harnesses. The dash bezel completely replaces the factory radio footprint and has large buttons which are back-lit to match the lighting on the Wrangler’s gauge cluster.
Audio sources include a built-in HD Radio™ receiver, “Made for iPod and iPhone” music control, audio streaming, Pandora® internet radio control from a smartphone, FLAC music playback via USB, and SiriusXM programming (SXV300 tuner and subscription required, sold separately). Video features include a new anti-glare screen and HDMI input for connectivity to HDMI-enabled devices. The navigation system has pre-loaded maps of the United States and Canada, with free lifetime HERE Traffic RDS service.
The X109-WRA comes with an iDatalink® Maestro® module to retain select factory features like steering wheel controls. Vehicle information such as tire pressure and user selectable gauges can also be viewed on the screen. The “My Favorites” function lets the user assign shortcuts to the most-used features like audio sources, navigation commands, and phone settings.
System Expansion
Jeep Wrangler owners often add accessories like a light bar, winch, air suspension, etc. for their off-road adventures. These accessories can be controlled from the X109-WRA’s touch screen when used with the optional KAC-001 External Accessory Control Module (sold separately). The X109-WRA can control up to eight accessories, and a graphical icon and name can be assigned to each one for quick identification on the screen. A simple press of the touch screen allows each accessory to be controlled as a pulsed, latched or momentary output, depending on how the accessory is configured.
The KCX-C250MC Multi-Camera Controller (sold separately) is helpful for Jeep Wranglers equipped with multiple camera systems. This optional module works with up to three camera systems and allows viewing modes from each camera to be controlled and monitored right from the X109-WRA’s touch screen.
Additional Features
The X109-WRA has a capacitive touch screen and a new GUI (graphical user interface) with 4-way swipe control so users are one swipe away from commonly accessed functions: swipe left for navigation, swipe right for audio and video features, swipe down to adjust the audio system or rear seat entertainment system (sold separately), and swipe up for Bluetooth and source selection. Within the audio and video page, the user can swipe across to access the entertainment sources connected to the system.
The X109-WRA is compatible with the new Alpine Connect app, which provides popular infotainment apps from leading content providers through the Alpine interface. Alpine Connect currently features apps from Yelp® and iHeartRadio, with more apps to be added in the future. The Alpine Connect app is free and available now on iTunes and Google Play.

This policy not only holds the dealer liable for its pricing to consumers but also holds the distributor liable for its dealers pricing making this one of the most effective policies presented to not fight but address the declining margin sales due to internet and cost cutting sales techniques.

ANSI/ALI ALIS 2009 (R2015) replaces ANSI/ALI ALIS 2009
Cortland, New York (June 7, 2016) – The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has approved the latest version of the American National Standard covering safety requirements for vehicle lift installation and service. The new standard, ANSI/ALI ALIS 2009 (R2015), replaces the existing standard, ANSI/ALI ALIS 2009, effective June 15, 2016.
ANSI/ALI ALIS 2009 (R2015) describes the duties and responsibilities of lift installers and service technicians, including the required qualifications, training, reporting and documentation. It also provides sample forms and checklists for use by installers and service personnel attempting to comply with the standard.
There are no substantive changes in the revised standard contents. It is distinguished from previous versions by a new full-color cover in place of the traditional pale yellow cover.

This free app, available for iPhone or Android smartphones, provides popular infotainment apps from leading content providers for select Alpine Restyle Dash systems in a format that is friendly for in-vehicle use. Alpine Connect users can now benefit from a consistent and familiar Alpine user interface experience when using apps in their vehicles without having to learn new controls or commands.

I’m a MECP Master Installer with 17 years experience working in the mobile electronics industry. I have worked in the install bay, also for Best Buy corporate in a Tech Support role, and now I am an Engine Performance Mechanic at a high-volume Ford Dealership in Michigan.
I hold an elite position in the service line, one typically earned through years of step-up positions within the service department. My Master Installer, ASE and state certifications, along with my experience in car audio installation qualified me to step right into this position. And although I am now Ford certified and attend ongoing manufacturer and vendor training, the core competencies I learned through earning my Master Installer certification are still the most important skills I rely on in my day-to-day work.
Looking back over my career as a technician, I have a few pieces of advice for those just starting out:
1. Find a niche. You need a niche in order to make yourself valuable. I suggest specializing in something that will be in demand for the foreseeable future. For example, if you are knowledgeable about electric principles and diagnosing circuits, there will be a demand for you. Many mechanics and techs struggle with theories and concepts and the demand for these skills is high. Always remember that you may not be the fastest, but tenacity and repetition will make you faster. Don’t be the tech that never has the time to do it right the first time, but always has time to fix it. Be thorough and consistent.
2. Network. Talk to people—in your shop, down the street, and in your industry. You may be surprised at how much free information is available to you and how strong you can make personal and business relationships with some face-to-face conversation. This may also help break down barriers between you and competitors. Don’t get me wrong, a little competition between rivals is a great motivator, but you should be able to lean on each other if there is a customer experience on the line. After all, customers are why we are in this business. Take care of the customer and keep them coming back.
3. Share what you know. As tempting as it is to hoard what you’ve learned as a way to create a niche for yourself, this practice is not sustainable in the long run. There’s so much that’s not written down, and at some point you will need to ask for help. If you consistently lend a hand, then you won’t feel awkward asking for help when you need it. If your coworker sees you’re willing to help him, you can feel at ease asking for his help. You have so much to share, yet so much to learn. As I like to say, it’s our job to always be training our replacement.
4. Get certified. Products and vehicles have changed drastically, yet despite their increased complexity, in many ways integrating aftermarket components with OEM systems is becoming simpler and simpler. Vehicle-specific interfaces and plug-and-play modules make our work easier, but they also mean we know less and less about how they actually work. This makes for quite a challenge troubleshooting them when they don’t work as we expect. It also makes troubleshooting legacy systems very challenging for those newer to the industry. One of the biggest under-appreciated aspects of becoming MECP certified is mastering the basics of electrical theory and installation. Understanding how and why a component works, not just how to connect it, is vitally important to your career.
5. Be in the moment. Making myself less connected may seem like counterculture, but putting my phone down is one of the best things I ever did for my career. Between email, texts, social media and online forums, my mind was always somewhere else. Being in the now, giving my full attention to my colleagues and customers and taking advantage of learning opportunities made a huge difference in my work and in how I feel about myself. You don’t have to abandon technology altogether, but making time to live in the moment opens doors. Try it.

June Issue Feature, June 1, 2016 -- Machines work in different ways. Most are designed to maximize productivity while working toward a higher efficiency. Goals are met either through computer-assisted adjustments or outside calibrations. The internal combustion engine is one such machine. Its early designs relied solely on moving parts that needed periodic replacement. Now, the engines include computers that monitor its status and notify the driver when maintenance is required.
The same could be said of a 12-volt retail business. If all is running smoothly, employees are generating revenue through a combination of sales and installation work. Occasionally, the store needs calibration due to the loss of an employee, a new employee, new product or other event that temporarily disrupts workflow. But the question is, how do you maintain a balance between the automated parts and the organic ones at a shop, since every employee is, after all, an individual? One retailer may have found the answer.
Carlos Ramirez, owner of NVS Audio in Linden, N.J. has created a shop culture that encapsulates the best of both worlds by creating strong processes for his staff to follow, no matter who's available to work them. Of his three employees, Ramirez admits that each has their specialty, but that doesn't mean they are limited to just that one thing.
"Some guys are better than others at things. Alain is the wiring and remote start guy. He's not good at wrapping upholstery. He struggles when trimming and wrapping. When we're not busy, I will have Damian on wiring and Alain will be wrapping upholstery the whole day," Ramirez said. "I like my guys cross-trained and efficient. Damian and Jairo are amazing at wrapping vinyl and upholstery. But with wiring, they get stuck on things Alain and I don't. I need to be able to sell three custom jobs and know that all three are being worked on whether my guys are sick or on vacation. I make sure they are all cross-trained."
The training concept begins in-house but extends to encourage all staff to be MECP-certified, which they are. Ramirez pays for any MECP test an employee wants to take, including paying them to take the day off for the test and providing a $50 cash bonus if they pass.
Employee training doesn't stop there, however. Two to three times a year Ramirez takes his staff to industry trainings with Sonus, Mobile Solutions and Del Ellis International. Employees are also trained on new products with the company's vendors conducting trainings on occasion. Ramirez attends KnowledgeFest alone in Dallas to enhance his own knowledge base as well.
Acknowledging that his staff are people and not just machines in a factory, Ramirez emphasizes the importance of treating his team like family to encourage better work and loyalty. This includes giving out bonuses for large jobs. "It's a percentage of what the total build was. As long as it was done on time, I give out a percentage based on how long they've worked for me," Ramirez added.
All employees are salaried with Ramirez doing the bulk of sales himself. In another effort to give back to his staff, he regularly treats them to meals, requesting they bring family members when available.
"If we had a rough work week, we go out. I make sure they take family. If your wife and kids hate what you do, you're not going to be working here very long," Ramirez said. "We go out to dinner all the time. The last employee who quit only quit because they moved. Because of the kinds of work the other shops in the area do, if an employee left for more pay, they'd be doing more work and more boring jobs."
New employees are given a three-month internship period where they are not allowed to touch any machinery. The goal is to acclimate the new hire to the shop's practices to ensure everything is standardized. The same goes for tools.
"If an employee doesn't have good credit it doesn't matter. All my guys have immediate credit with Snap-on Tools. I have a list of tools you have to buy to work here. Some tools I provide. I buy the same socket set, one for each employee. Little things like that make us more efficient."
The longest tenured employee, Alain Sainvil, has been with NVS for 10 years, followed by Damian Kaminski with five years and Jairo Zuniga with just over one year employed. Each employee was discovered in different ways, with a grass-roots, natural method used for each.
"Alain has 16 years of experience and used to work at a big box store, 6th Avenue Electronics. He was hired part-time originally and used to wire big builds for me. Then he quit 6th Ave and came to work for me full-time. They didn't do a lot of custom work. That's what he's passionate about," Ramirez said. "Damian walked in with a customer and asked if we were hiring. He asked on a perfect day when we were busy. He had zero experience but just graduated electronics school and was certified. I hired Jairo fresh out of school. I don't like hiring experienced installers because I feel I have to erase everything they think they know and start fresh. Damian never worked at a shop before and I've built him into one of the best fabricators I've ever known in my career. We do things a certain way. Every single part gets wired the same way. Every speaker adapter gets done the same way. We developed a system."

Edmunds, DETROIT, June 1, 2016 — Software-related vehicle safety recalls are on the rise, according to a new analysis by J.D. Power SafetyIQ.
SafetyIQ, an online application developed by J.D. Power that integrates National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data with the research firm's own automotive data, shows that software-related formal complaints by consumers so far in 2016 are at least on par with this time last year.
And 2015 set a record for these types of complaints, with 615 lodged for the full year, compared to the previous annual record of 505 set in 2014.
J.D. Power notes that over the past five years, consumers have registered a total of 2,011 formal complaints related to automotive software with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"Consumer complaints are the canaries in the coal mine for automobile manufacturers when it comes to anticipating future recalls and longer-term customer satisfaction," said Renee Stephens, vice president of U.S. Automotive at J.D. Power, in a statement. "Software-related problems have become much more prevalent and, if not addressed, could begin to erode consumer trust in new automotive technology."
SafetyIQ reveals a clear connection between consumer complaints and recall decisions, with the number of recalls increasing at a rate similar to the number of formal grievances filed.
J.D. Power's analysis shows that 189 software-related recalls have been issued over the past five years affecting more than 13 million vehicles, most involving the vehicles' powertrains, electrical systems, cooling systems and control systems. Of those, 141 recalls were said to present a risk of crashing, and 44 had the potential to cause injury.
Although car shoppers may be wowed by the latest vehicle technology, such as on-board connectivity and systems automation, some of the latest tech trends have already been the cause of some concern among consumers.
For example, as previously reported by Edmunds, connectivity has brought along with it the threat of hacking, which some motorists fear could cause them to lose control of a vehicle and possibly result in a crash.
A U.S. Senate report last year concluded, "There is a clear lack of appropriate security measures to protect drivers against hackers who may be able to take control of a vehicle or against those who may wish to collect and use personal driver information."

The S65 Series features a square design utilizing MTX Audio's patented surround geometry (US Patent #7,275,620) that allows for increased Xmax and lower distortion resulting in higher SPL and better sound quality.
