What’s New for 2022?
If you’re considering getting involved in the Industry Awards, there’s no better time than the present

The Mobile Electronics Industry Awards comprises a months-long process to recognize and honor those in the industry who best exemplify the professionalism, business ethics, service and expertise we want consumers to notice when they do business with us.

Candidate companies and individuals submit video nominations and are narrowed to a list of finalists after a selection or voting process. In certain award categories, finalists submit material that’s judged by a select panel to determine a winner. In other categories, final voting tallies determine the winner. In past years, the awards ceremony has been held on the last day of KnowledgeFest in Dallas, hosted by the Mobile Electronics Association (MEA). But as you probably know by now, this coming year will see the industry’s return to Las Vegas.

Refreshing the awards process
Many in the industry have expressed a wish that the Industry Awards undergo a refresh. You let us know, and we listened. We’ve gathered a committee of past award winners in various categories to discuss the best way to evolve and to honor our industry participants. This fresh presentation of the Industry Awards allows for clear progression from one award to the next, further encouraging winners to continue pursuing excellence as they advance in their careers.

As part of this refresh, we’ve engaged some of the new committee members to help explain what’s new for 2022 via online video presentation. Kicking it off are Jeff Smith and Dean Beyett—both of whom have won Industry Awards in the past—to preview the changes. The entire video presentation can be found on the Mobile Electronics magazine Facebook page [Click Here]. To help us all stay on track and aware of our deadlines, we’ve created a clear timeline that’s now listed on the homepage at www.meindustryawards.com. In addition, the submission process has been refined to make it easier to create your submission and video. Most of the changes are related to the retailer and installer awards, with a couple of new awards for the vendor community.

Here’s a summary of the changes
The Installer of the Year will consist of one award with no runner-up. All of the questions for the initial video submission have also been streamlined and presented in order. We also reduced the number of years of experience required from five to two years.

The Trusted Tech will now be selected by the judges from the Top 50 Installers and no longer requires a separate nomination.

The Rookie of the Year Award will allow submissions for both installers and salespeople with up to two years of experience.

The Retailer of the Year will have two categories: Single Store and Multi-Store, with no runners-up.

Finally, Retailer Performance Awards will now be selected by the judges from the Top 12 Retailers. Alternates will be included in the selection. In the past, awards such as Best Online Presence and Best Customer Retention required their own nomination. This time, if you’re a retailer and you get picked into the Top 12—including alternates—when you make your second video, those questions will be included to allow the judges to recognize retailers who excel in specific areas.

For the Top Vendor Awards there are two new categories:
Lighting – products or technology related to lighting and appearance for automotive, marine, and power sports, lighting solutions.

OEM Integration – products or technology that integrates into an automobile’s electrical/data systems for audio, video, steering wheel control, remote start, and or any product or technology that allows for integration for an installed product.

Also, we will recognize the Top Vendor Support Technician who best exemplifies the characteristics of professionalism, service, and expertise, as voted by peers, staff and judges throughout the Industry Awards process.

All retailer awards will allow for self-nominations with a second, as well as blind nominations. Once you’ve been selected for Top 12 and Top 5, there will be a new outline and set of questions. Turn in your nominations by midnight on November 14 for consideration. On the deadline, all nominations must be received along with the videos. Be on the lookout for on the Top 50 and Top 20 announcements on December 3. We’ll make these announcements via video, and we’ll list them on the Industry Awards website.

Spread the Word at KnowledgeFest
KnowledgeFest Dallas will be held December 10-12. If you attend, you’ll get an additional ribbon to display on your badge that recognizes your place on the Top 50 or Top 20. This is a great way to encourage peers to vote for you during the event. Voting for that round ends on December 19 at midnight.

Recognition for the Committee
The Mobile Electronics Association would like to extend a special thank you to all the Industry Awards committee members for their time and contributions.

Recently Patented, This Tactical-Inspired Body Cladding is Equipped with Multi-Function Integrated LED Lights that Provide Benefits to Both Driver and Passengers as a Stylish and Functional Upgrade for 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK Models

METAIRIE, LA, Nov. 1, 2021 – Oracle Lighting (www.oraclelights.com), the market leader in creating high quality lighting products and innovative LED solutions for the automotive aftermarket, will feature its recently patented Sidetrack™ LED Lighting System for 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK (p/n 5873-504) during the 2021 SEMA Show, held in Las Vegas, Nev. from Nov. 2-5 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, booth #C20547.Now shipping, the Sidetrack™ LED Lighting System has an MSRP of $199.95 and is also available for JL/JT (p/n 5861-504).

“ORACLE Lighting’s Sidetrack™ LED Lighting System is a stylish and functional upgrade for Jeep Wrangler JK models,” said Justin Hartenstein, Oracle Lighting director of development. “This tactical-inspired body cladding is equipped with multi-function integrated LED lights that provide benefits to both driver and passengers.”

The light modules consist of a pair of injection-molded inserts that fit in the original body lines for a seamless look with an option to create a functional fender vent. Matte black panels provide an aggressive look that adds a rugged and tactical appearance to the Jeep. Installation requires no modification to the fender sheet metal…the cladding simply applies with included VHB adhesive.

The LED “Entry Light” features high-output white LEDs which is a side-light intended to illuminate the area outside of the vehicle for the driver and passengers approaching the vehicle at night. This convenient feature allows the driver and passengers to identify puddles, potholes, and other hazards when entering and exiting the vehicle. The entry lights are connected to the vehicle’s dome light circuit so the entry lights will activate when the vehicle is unlocked, when the doors open, and can be manually turned on with the factory control knob.

The LED “Turn Indicator” addresses a potential safety issue with the U.S.-spec Jeep Wrangler JK models which do not have a clear indicator on the side of the vehicle. This can be inconvenient when changing lanes with a vehicle is positioned in the Jeep’s blind spot…this blind spot is increased substantially on lifted vehicles. By adding a bright amber indicator in a clearly visible position, the Sidetrack™ provides a needed visibility benefit for lifted Jeeps.

October 28, 2021, North Andover, Mass — The Mobile Electronics Association (MEA), producer of Mobile Electronics magazine, announced that industry professionals can now submit their nominations for inclusion in the 2022 Industry Awards. Nominations will be accepted until November 14th.

The Mobile Electronics Industry Awards celebrate companies and individuals that best exemplify the highest standards of quality and service excellence. Winners represent the industry at-large to consumers and act as ideal examples to better peers within the industry. The process starts with nominations submitted online and via video. A panel of judges selects the Top 50 Retailers, Top 50 Installers, and Top 20 Sales Professionals, which are eligible to move on to the second phase of the awards process. In addition to the retailer nominations, the process for recognizing top vendors, sales reps and firms, and distributors is open for nominations as well. Final awards are given out at a special ceremony held on the last day of KnowledgeFest Las Vegas held February 18-20.

“The Industry Awards process is one of the most anticipated events in the mobile electronics industry,” said Chris Cook, MEA president. “It’s the one time when professionals are called on to promote themselves in one phase, then reach out to their peers and customers for support in the next phase. The final phase is a grueling preparation of materials for judging that often reveals aspects—both positive and negative—of a person’s character or work ethic, or a business’ focus and direction. Most who have gone through the process say it is as fulfilling as it is challenging.”

Mobile Electronics is accepting nominations through its special website at www.meindustryawards.com. Nominees submit a short video outlining their qualifications. Retailers, installation technicians, vendors, distributors, and sales representatives have until November 14th to submit nominations.

Complete information on the Industry Awards, including rules, award descriptions, past winners, eligibility requirements, instructions and submissions can be found at www.meindustryawards.com.

RINGWOOD, IL – October 21, 2021 -- Race Sport Lighting is excited to announce the launch of their new P-Series projector perfect LED headlight lineup. This product was developed and tested in their lab over the last year and is now available to the marketplace. The P-Series is the first headlight kit approved by their product specialists to produce a 100 percent perfect beam out of a projector lens with no spray lines or shadowing. These kits provide effective projection down the road without any performance loss. All other LED kits on the market experience performance issues when placed into projectors because projector lenses were originally engineered to work with HID technology. With the increase in popularity of LED headlights, the need for a LED solution to projector lenses was too much to ignore.

“Our whole team is excited to launch this new P-Series product to the marketplace. We have had the projector problem solved for the last 5 years with our GEN6® HID headlight kits, but many customers continued to insist on putting LED technologies into the projector style lenses on newer vehicles. It was imperative that we engineered an exclusive LED kit that provides another option with LED technology that we can feel comfortable putting our stamp of approval on,” said Steve Jergensen, President of Race Sport Lighting.

The P-Series boasts an amazing 3,950 LUX light output per bulb – giving the user almost 8,000 total LUX per kit. A high LUX output is required to properly project the 360° perfect light array down the road out of the lens. The P-Series closely resembles the down-road performance of their notorious GEN6® HID Conversion kits that have been the ultimate projector solution for thousands of dealers in the industry. If that was not enough, every P-Series kit is packaged with CANBUS decoders to ensure a successful install every time - even in vehicles with complex electrical systems.

“The P-Series LED Solve-All Kit is going to provide a solution to all the questions people are asking when it comes to vehicles equipped with projector lenses. This kit is going to be the next hot product for everyone to talk about at future tradeshows. This will change how LEDs are looked at, and it will be a home run for resellers all around North America,” said Ignacio Ayala, Inside Sales & Product Specialist

The new P-Series Projector Perfect LED kits are in stock and shipping in six bulb bases (H7, H8, H11, 9005, 9006, and 9012) out of the Northern Illinois warehouse. All distributors and dealers are encouraged to get this new technology in stock and experience the LED solution to projector lenses.

Holly Hill, Fla. – October 13, 2021 – Metra Electronics® announces that it will have two booths at the 2021 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, with booth 12141 in the North Hall and its off-roading and powersports products on display at booth 61041 in the West Hall. This year marks Metra’s 75th anniversary in manufacturing and will be celebrated with a look back at Metra’s car audio history on social media. As Metra Electronics releases new product announcements for the SEMA Show, it will also showcase a look at products from the past, celebrating both old and new innovations in the aftermarket automotive industry.

How Metra Electronics Started

It all began in 1946 at a little shop in Brooklyn, New York, with founder Michael M. Somma fixing and selling TVs and FM radios. Soon, they began creating FM radios specifically for cars under the name MetraVox and found a big demand for installations in taxi cabs. Taxi drivers spent their entire workday in their vehicle and now they could enjoy listening to the radio. Naturally, Metra’s radio kits took off. This is where the business split into a new entity focusing entirely on car audio, called Metra Electronics. Metra manufactured complete radio installation kits that included wiring and harnesses, becoming a pioneer in the car audio industry.

A Change in the Industry

Up to this point, dealerships were a major customer, purchasing radio kits from Metra to install into vehicles before they left the lot. It was in the 1980s that things began to change and transition from OE radio installations to aftermarket. The Custom Aftermarket Sound Association (CASA) was formed and lobbied to make radios optional for car manufacturers. At this point, Single-DIN radios were in use and European models were becoming more prevalent. These models required a different dashboard to fit the standard Single-DIN radio, making installation challenging for all of the various makes and models on the road. Metra Electronics became one of the first to offer a solution, focusing on its support for the radio business by providing dash kits with the installation hardware and essentials required for aftermarket radio replacement.

Metra Grows Through the Years

In the 1980s, it became clear that Metra was outgrowing its operations, which now took up an entire city block with 100,000 square feet of space in Brooklyn, New York. The company needed to find a new home. In 1986, Metra’s corporate headquarters packed up and moved south, settling in Holly Hill, Florida, where the company remains today. Several events helped contribute to the growth of the company, with Metra first attending the SEMA Show in 1980, becoming a fixture at the annual event. Recognizing the importance of developing relationships with face-to-face time, Metra’s President, Bill Jones, took a motorcycle road trip through the United States in 1991, visiting its distributors and customers throughout the region.

In 1992, Mr. Jones realized that an organized training program was needed for an industry that was growing too fast. With no standardized methods for training or schools specifically for 12volt installers, he created Installer Institute in Holly Hill, FL. Since 1992, Installer Institute has graduated thousands of students and helped push MECP and MESA certifications. In 2016, the school became accredited by the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education & Training, and most recently had its 26-week program eligible for Title IV funding so that students could apply for federal financial aid to cover their tuition.

Metra Introduces New Brands

In the early 2000s, Metra grew beyond dash kits, creating Axxess® for vehicle integration and Tsunami® for car audio wiring and audio installation accessories. While Tsunami’s brand name evolved into the T-Spec® and Raptor® product lines, Axxess remains a top name among professional 12volt installers. In 2003, Axxess introduced interfaces to retain the door chimes in Chevrolet, which became the start of a long line of products developed to accommodate the ever-changing vehicle technology seen in different makes and models. The Install Bay® brand was also created to offer all of a shop’s hardware essentials in one place, becoming the largest product line in the Metra portfolio. To complete an aftermarket audio installation, Metra created Shuriken High Performance Batteries® along with Ballistic® sound damping. In 2014, Heise LED Lighting® became its premiere LED lighting brand, soon followed by iBEAM Vehicle Safety Systems®, AmmoTenna®, Metra PowerSports®, Saddle Tramp®, Metra Marine®, Daytona Lights®, and a product line of accessories dedicated entirely to Jeeps®.

In 2001, Metra applied its expertise in car audio connectivity to create Ethereal Home Theater®, a division specifically for HDMI® products and home theater systems. Today, this division has been rebranded as MetraAV® and has grown to include Ethereal®, Velox®, Spyclops®, and Helios® product lines. MetraAV is now known as one of the most reliable manufacturers for premium residential and commercial integration products.

75 years after introducing its first automotive radio kit, Metra Electronics will attend the 2021 SEMA Show to celebrate its innovations over the decades. New product highlights include a growing lineup of dash kits and integration products designed to bring upgraded sound systems into older and newer vehicles. Metra will also showcase accessories and lighting packages designed for Jeep® Wrangler and Gladiator, new RGB and RGBW lighting kits, redesigned LED lightbars from Heise, and new monitors and cameras from iBEAM. In the off-road/powersports booth, attendees will see universal audio products plus audio accessories designed specifically for Polaris® and Can-Am® UTVs. Daytona Lights will also expand its value series of LED lights, doubling its product offerings. For motorcycles, Metra’s Saddle Tramp® brand will introduce new audio installation products and lighting accessories designed to fit Harley-Davidson®. Product announcements will be released with more details closer to the show.

At Metra, 12volt installation and integration is our passion. We strive to continuously offer the highest quality products to meet the fluctuating technological challenges of the automotive world. We actively listen to our customers’ requests and invest resources in developing the highest quality dash kit and harness solutions. We make dash kits for more vehicle applications than anyone else in the world. That’s why we’ve been known as “The Installer’s Choice” ® for more than 75 years. Our other brands include: Axxess®, T-SPEC®, The Install Bay®, Heise LED Lighting Systems®, iBEAM Vehicle Safety Systems®, Shuriken High Performance Batteries®, Raptor®, Ballistic®, AmmoTenna®, Metra PowerSports®, Saddle Tramp®, Metra Marine® and Daytona Lights®. The Metairie, LA-Based Company Has Been a Market Leader in Innovative LED Lighting Solutions for the Automotive Aftermarket Since 1999

METAIRE, LA, Oct. 12, 2021 – Oracle Lighting (www.oraclelights.com) is proud to announce that it has been named a finalist for SEMA’s Manufacturer of the Year. Also, for the third year in a row, founder Justin Hartenstein has been named a finalist for the prestigious SEMA Gen-III Innovator of the Year.

The Manufacturer of the Year Award is presented annually to recognize one company that represents the industry's core values through innovative processes and products, outstanding business practices, workforce excellence, protection of brand equity, and active SEMA participation in the support of the automotive aftermarket.

“We are incredibly proud to be finalists for two industry awards, and it is an honor to be recognized in our first nomination for Manufacturer of the Year,” said Tiffanie Hartenstein, Oracle Lighting Chief Executive Officer. “Our team values the opportunity to be an engaged member of SEMA and to contribute to the continued success of the automotive aftermarket industry. As a company, we thrive on innovation in all aspects and are committed to fostering growth in spite of the challenges our industry has faced. We are excited to represent the values that propel us forward in enriching the aftermarket experience.”

One of just two individual awards that the SEMA organization presents each year, the Gen-III innovator is an honor given to a young innovator who exhibits the same pioneering spirit as the original industry founders. According to SEMA, the Gen-III Innovator of the Year recognizes individuals whose work is changing the way the automotive aftermarket does business. He or she may have been the first to act on a new trend, invented an original product or devised and implemented ideas that better suit the current automotive marketplace.

“It is truly an honor to be named a finalist for an award that recognizes hard work and innovation in such a large and dynamic industry,” said Justin Hartenstein, Oracle Lighting director of development who founded Oracle Lighting in his garage in 1999. “And to top it off, Oracle Lighting has received another prestigious honor as being named a finalist for Manufacturer of the Year. I would like to congratulate our team for making this happen as 2020 and 2021 have been tough on our industry and, despite this challenge, Oracle Lighting has continued to accelerate and grow.”

The SEMA Industry Awards recognize outstanding contributions to the specialty-equipment industry. Winners will be announced and recognized during the SEMA Industry Awards Banquet, Thursday, November 4 at The SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nev.

When the Coronavirus pandemic first began, as for many other manufacturers, demand began to decrease as the economy slowed. Being the innovator that he is, Hartenstein pivoted and redirected his energy into an anti-virus device utilizing UV lighting technology. The result was the A.I.R. Device (Antimicrobial Irradiation Respirator), the world's first UV face mask. In 2021, Oracle Lighting donated many of these masks to local Louisiana charities to help slow the spread.

In 2021, Oracle Lighting was also ranked as the third fastest growing company in the entire metro New Orleans area, with a three-year growth rate of 56 percent, according to New Orleans CityBusiness magazine.

Besides being a trend-setter, enthusiast, and innovator, Hartenstein is also an advocate for the automotive lighting aftermarket, making him an excellent candidate for this award. He sees the challenges that are taking a toll on the aftermarket lighting industry such as overseas counterfeiting. After months of working with foreign courts, attorneys, private investigators, and other authorities in China, Hartenstein filed and won legal action against an underground counterfeit factory ring in China that has repeatedly violated not only the Intellectual Property of ORACLE Lighting but of a half dozen other SEMA manufacturers.

In 2021, Oracle Lighting won its legal battle against a Chinese-based manufacturer of imitation products after a failed appeal process by the defendant. Hartenstein hopes to use this experience to create a roadmap for other SEMA manufacturers to follow in order to receive relief from the damage caused by illicit counterfeiting in the industry.
