12-11-2017, Mobile Electronics -- The end of the year brings many tasks for a retail shop. Decisions are made about the success or failure of product lines, promotions used throughout the year, employee growth versus areas for improvement, hiring, firing, profit versus loss on the year and hundreds of other micro issues that can stress out even the most seasoned business owner.

In 12-volt, there are enough categories of product alone to make a person's head spin. That's why for the second year in a row, Mobile Electronics magazine sent out a job satisfaction survey to help retailers identify issues they might be having related to employee satisfaction. This was done not only to help take away the stress of finding out these things themselves, but had the intention of helping take a major category off of their plates when planning for next year.

Each portion of the survey was broken into sections that focused on a different topic. The 47-question survey included questions on career development, work engagement, compensation, relationship management and work environment.

Career Development

The first topic the survey focused on was career development. The majority of those surveyed in total (46 percent) were owners, while lead installers came in second at 11 percent and the installation managers and regular installation technicians came in tied for third at around five percent. Around 30 percent of those who answered about their satisfaction regarding professional growth agreed with being satisfied, while around 19 percent disagreed with 23 percent remaining neutral on the topic.

The neutrals came in even stronger when asked if they are pleased with career advancement opportunities available to them. Around 35 percent of workers were neutral while around 19 percent both agreed and disagreed with the statement. This statistic shows that the majority of those surveyed believe career advancement is limited but may likely not be upset about that fact given the popularity of the jobs themselves. The top answer for how involved employees feel in their work was to strongly agree at being very involved. Similar questions about getting excited to go to work and the level of effort employees are willing to give at work each day were resoundingly affirmative.

Compensation is often a sore spot for many Americans these days, with 12-volt retailers split down the middle on whether they feel fairly compensated. For many in the survey, their love of their work keeps them happier than the pay they receive, which includes business owners.

"As an owner, shop compensation is a bit different than if you are a tech. Everyone always wants more one way or another but as an owner I am happy with my salary," explained one surveyed retailer. "As far as the business as a whole, I mainly just want for the shop to make enough money to pay all of my guys, cover all bills, and make a little bit more each year to invest back into the shop. I don't ever plan on getting rich owning my shop I just want to be comfortable and not stress over paying each bill or employee."

Training is also a major issue for employees, with nearly a quarter of those surveyed believing they don't receive adequate training from their company. One owner said, "We need to do a better job of training people. That’s on me!!" Another added, "I want to go to training to advance my skills but it must be on my time and my money." In contrast, over 50 percent of respondents believe they do receive proper training, including both in-house and training at industry events.

Santa came early for the Tunes-N-Tint Crew this year and brought all new displays just in time for the holidays.
Lakeland, FL For Immediate Release (12/1/17) – Tunes‐N‐Tint a Florida retailer remodels store and invests in new displays from 5‐Axis just in time for the holiday rush.

Tunes‐N‐Tint has retrofitted it’s store with customized displays catering to Tunes‐N‐Tint’s offering and its customers needs. Tunes‐N‐Tint often refreshes its stores every 2‐3 years and typically builds its own displays. After seeing 5‐axis displays in person at MESA Summit and ME Spring Knowledgefest events Joe Cassity, operations manager–Tunes‐N-Tint–decided this time around they would outsource their design and construction and chose 5‐axis as their partner.

“We were very particular with our displays, our layout and overall showroom design. We started working with 5‐axis in June of 2016 for a rough overview on what we wanted to do.” Working with Jody Culbertson, 5‐Axis Director & Lead Designer, Cassity & Team put together planograms, store layouts and general broad overviews on how the displays were to function. Based on these sketches and drawings Culbertson was able to put together packages which met the budget and the goals laid out. The end result was over 20 different customer stations each customized and showcasing an array of categories including Lighting, Safety, Upholstery, Window film, truck accessories and more.

Over the years as Tunes‐N‐Tint’s offerings have grown so have the need to display these various emerging categories. Cassity believes that the #1 differentiator between B&M retailers and internet sellers is the ability to touch and interact with the product. “Our displays sets us apart from our competition. Even when speaking with customers we always discuss our custom, interactive displays where they can look, feel and hear the product first hand for themselves”, says Cassity.

The Tunes‐N‐Tint team completely gutted the showroom and started from scratch. Everything was repainted, touched up from top to bottom before a single new display was installed. All of the displays are made using Metal Framing securely fastened to the wall with individualized power supplies and custom printed panels showcasing the categories and the products involved. The actual installation took less than a week, with building/design happening before hand and any cosmetics or troubleshooting occurring in the weeks that followed.

The #1 goal was to be ready for Black Friday weekend which kick starts the retailers Holiday season. In order to complete the build in the time allotted Tunes‐N‐Tint reached out to some of its partners for help. Scosche provided new MESA wiring for the displays, AAMP supplied a fully loaded matching display, Mike Eckley (ME Mag Rep of the year for AAMP Global) & Bill Freeman (MAG Sales) provided physical help and installation support, as well as support from Kenwood, JL Audio, Rockford Fosgate, Directed, 3M & More. “We were absolutely blown away by the support our Reps and Vendor partners gave us”, said Cassity. “We’re very fortunate to have chosen the right partners in our vendors. They really stepped up and came threw for us in a lot of ways”.

“The feedback we’ve received already is amazing. Our team, our customers, our suppliers, everyone loves the way it turned out. It’s given our staff more confidence to sell. It’s given our customers yet another reason to shop Local and be part of the Tunes‐N‐Tint Family. We couldn’t be happier with the work Jody & 5‐AXIS did for us. “, stated Cassity. Tunes‐N‐Tint is a mobile electronics retailer operating “Restyling Centers” in Central Florida formerly known as Alarms, ETC. Tunes‐
N‐Tint is a MESA member and employs MECP & ASE Certified technicians for installation services and has been nationally recognized as a Top 50 retailer and has been recognized for Best Customer Experience, by ME Mag in 15’. EchoMaster is Leading the Way to Safer Roads and Lane Change Assistance with Integrated Safety Solutions for Ford Transit Vans

Clearwater, FL (December 6, 2017) With the onslaught of holiday drivers increasing, confusion at the curb during airport runs, and the weather conditions becoming more treacherous, comes the increased possibility of car accidents. EchoMaster, designer and manufacturer of collision avoidance solutions for aftermarket and OEM, seeks to lessen these accidents with safety camera technology for the Ford Transit Van.

The camera solutions effectively assist in safe lane changes and eliminate blind spots, protecting your vehicle, passengers, and other assets from potential liabilities. EchoMaster’s side blind spot and lane change assist system includes proprietary designed mirror caps with integrated cameras. Responsive to driver behavior, the camera view is triggered on using the turn signals, eliminating side blind spots.

To lessen the risk of an accident, the vehicle-specific side mirror caps with integrated cameras add visibility, without adding bulk to the van’s exterior.

EchoMaster’s FCTP-FT1602 system is customizable and fully integrates into the vehicle’s current electronic system, so driver’s gain safety features without complication. Attuned to driver behavior, the system’s side cameras are activated when turn signals are used; speed sensing front camera is activated when the vehicle is going under a certain speed, and the reverse camera when the vehicle is placed in reverse.

Featured in the kit are 2 proprietary, factory-matched side mirror caps with built-in blind spot elimination cameras, activated by turn signal and integrated with the OE radio. The vehicle-specific integration module is plug-and-play and integrates cameras seamlessly into the van’s OEM radio screen; cameras are activated when turn signals are used, or when the vehicle is shifted into drive and reverse. Kits also include everything needed for a plug-and-play installation including camera harnesses and adapters.

FCTP-FT1602 Kits with perfect fit Non-Tow mirror caps are available today for Ford Transit Vans (with factory 4.2" display radio) vehicles. 12-5-2017, trucks.com -- Autonomous technology is set to transform the motor industry, but there are no clear paths for manufacturers. As the autonomous mobility industry takes shape, artificial intelligence could play a much bigger role.

The Society of Automotive Engineers uses a classification system of 5 levels of vehicle autonomy based on the amount of necessary driver intervention. Level 1, for example, requires a driver to be in control at all times but allows for automated acceleration and braking. Level 5 requires no human intervention. Most automakers are on the cusp of introducing Level 3 and 4 autonomous vehicles.

The Self-Drive Act passed in September will establish key deadlines for how these technologies will make their way onto the streets and highways. It will allow stakeholders to put up to 100,000 autonomous vehicles on the road for testing purposes by 2021.

The pace at which the technology is developing has created an environment where traditional manufacturers risk being overtaken by tech firms. This is pushing cross-industry collaboration.

Self-driving systems are now based on complex algorithms, cameras and Lidar sensors to create a digital world that helps autonomous vehicles orient their position on the road and identify other vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. Such systems are incredibly difficult to design and produce. They must be programmed to cope with an almost limitless number of variables found on roads.

As the industry looks to machine-learning as the basis for autonomous systems, artificial intelligence could be the next big disruptor.

November Issue Feature: Installs - Live From Tempe

Wednesday, 29 November 2017

11-29-2017, Mobile Electronics -- In response to its popularity earlier this year, Mobile Solutions and Orca Design and Manufacturing teamed up again September 9 through 11 to host a live build workshop for 25 installation techs from around the country. The training was sold out and featured 2017 Installer of the Year Chris Pate, past IOTYs Tom Miller and JT Torres, Top 12 Installer Sage Weir and Bryan Schmitt, owner of Mobile Solutions. The vehicle used was a 2017 Volvo V90 XC Cross Country, owned by Mobile Electronics Editor-in-Chief, Solomon Daniels.

"We basically had three different components to the class, which was blended in with our Master Tech class. We talk about OEM integration, signal and how to add audio to modern vehicles," Schmitt said. "We did a classroom theory, how to use test tools like the oscilloscope and RTA, then talked about it in a real world fashion. I thought it was great for guys to see live demonstrations on a real build while they were there. Trying to stick with the three-day time period was a challenge. We did a great job managing it."

The participants were thrown into the mix with no preparation after an initial sketch of the design was created by Tom Miller. Each person found something of interest to them and began working on that element. "The most difficult part was building something that someone else drew," Weir added. "It was my first time out there at Mobile Solutions. I didn't have any assigned tasks per se. I just started running wires into the doors, then showed interest in the sub enclosure."

When I fabricate and build stuff I basically freestyle. I've never really built anything from paper to reality. It was a rewarding challenge in the end."

All products used were provided by Focal and included Focal Kevlar K2 tweeter speakers, 6-inch mid bass and 3-inch mid range speakers in the doors, two amplifiers and a controller for the console. "The whole project was a real world install. It's something that we would actually do for one of our customers in any of our shops," Miller said. "The process that we used is called 'Design, Engineer, Fabricate.' It's a three step process. The idea there is that by breaking down the project to three separate steps it allows us to get a better result."

Miller, who served as design director for the project, likes to use the design language of the vehicle he's working on to give him ideas. In the case of Volvo, he is already familiar with the designer and previous work, which is Scandinavian in style and includes straight lines, with a clean, uncluttered look. "In this project, the areas where we had an influence were with the tweeters and subwoofer enclosure. With those, I'm trying to reflect the existing design language without doing anything too contrived where I'm just pulling a shape off of the car that's already there and just trying to emulate that," Miller added.

While it was a team effort, each portion of the build was managed by a different person. While Weir handled the sub enclosure, Miller worked on the A-pillars, Pate handled the wiring and amp mounting and Torres handled the controller.

VISTA, Calif. (November 20, 2017) – Directed today announces that Clifford® branded DS4 Digital Systems are now available and shipping, expanding the successful launch of the breakthrough DS4 technology.

Founded in 1976, Clifford® pioneered most of the innovations and features found in today’s remote controlled security systems. DS4 is Directed’s flagship technology and is available in Viper®, Astrostart®, Autostart®, and now Clifford® brands. DS4 Digital Systems simplify and improve the remote start and security experience for consumers, installers, and retailers.

“Our goal in designing DS4 was to create the most powerful system in the industry,” said Directed SVP Product Development & Technical Service James Turner. “Clifford® DS4 opens up this exciting new technology to a broader set of dealers. We’ve focused on protecting all our DS4 dealers. Each DS4 is assigned to a specific account, and our Directechs website is configured so only that account can flash the unit. This is true for all DS4 brands - it’s the most protected product we’ve ever offered.”

The new DS4 Digital Systems feature four key technologies that are integrated into one single and powerful device. Remote start, security, interface, and Bluetooth® all work together seamlessly with the vehicle’s existing systems to enable a connected-car experience like no other.

With DS4 comes DirectLink, a new proprietary wireless programming connection between the installer and the system in the vehicle via integrated Bluetooth® technology, reducing installation time. DS4 systems also provide near-range smartphone control for consumers when paired with the FREE Directed SmartStart mobile app.

DS4 offers new and exciting features that will drive consumers into authorized retailers, and this configurable and expandable inventory reduces cost. DS4 provides faster installations which means more vehicles through the bay, increasing profits. The available and optional shock sensor/tilt sensor/temperature sensor allows DS4 Digital Systems to provide ultimate protection for the vehicle.
