11-6-2017 -- For most of us, and for a long time, thinking about the phrase “the office” or “office culture” conjured up a similar, and quintessential, image. It probably contained rows of cubicles, and variations on an uncomfortable type of chair.

But these days, office culture is increasingly about the intangibles we can’t see as easily: ideas. Startups have emerged in recent years as thought leaders in a variety of encouraging ways throughout the business world. By the time they’re done, office culture might mean something totally different to the next generation.

Here are three ways they’re doing it.

Letting Employees Address Life’s Small Necessities

One of the greatest gifts startup culture has delivered so far to the corporate world has been the loosening of the clichéd and claustrophobic nine-to-five routine we’re all so familiar with. Sure, even some of the larger corporations have embraced ideas like “flex time” over the years, but it took our great pivot back to garage-based startups and locally owned businesses for the concept to really take off.

A lot of today’s startups choose to trust their employees with managing their own schedules, up to and including deciding for themselves when to show up to the office, and how long it takes them to get their work done. Flex time is a huge benefit to working parents and anybody else who wishes to balance a rewarding career with an equally rewarding and rich home life. The latter rarely comes at us on a fixed schedule — and startups seem to appreciate this.

Northwestern MutualVoice:Divorcing on the Doorstep of Retirement? Here Are 5 Things You Need to Know

Today’s startups just seem to “get it” in a way some of the entrenched corporate presences haven’t caught on to: Time spent relaxing or with family isn’t a waste, and happy employees are more thoughtful and productive.

11-6-2017, ATWATER, CA – Riding in Waymo’s fully autonomous Chrysler Pacifica minivan is amazing and boring at the same time.

Amazing because it whizzes around the test track here at an abandoned Air Force base without anyone in the front seats; boring because it does everything so effortlessly there’s nothing to get excited about.

Potential threats lurk everywhere on the test track: there are technicians posing as distracted bicyclists and pedestrians, simulated construction areas and impatient drivers entering roundabouts out of turn. It could be as scary as a Halloween funhouse, but instead the minivan calmly avoids every hazard without drama or screeching tires. A display screen in front of us shows the vehicle is seeing every potential interaction long in advance.

Most of the time it looks like a typical navigation display, but it periodically lights up like an x-ray to reveal everything the minivan actually is seeing: an intensely detailed three-dimensional real-time Lidar map of every object, person and tree branch up to three football fields away.

The extraordinary detail is fleeting “because we don’t want to overwhelm people with information,” an engineer sitting with us in the second row says.

You push a button to start the ride and you can push another if you want to stop and get out early. And there’s another button to call a Waymo advisor if there is a problem or a question. That’s about it for human controls.

Most automakers and suppliers are looking to ease into the age of self-driving vehicles with a step-by-step approach that gradually moves up the SAE scale from Level 2 (relatively minor driver assist), to Level 4. Level 3 autonomy anticipates human intervention in certain driving situations while Level 4 is considered highly automated, capable of responding in all driving situations with or without human interaction. Level 5 assumes the vehicle will handle all aspects of driving, including offroading and extreme weather.

But Waymo, formerly known as the Google self-driving car project, is going all-in. “Our goal is L4 in SAE terminology,” Waymo CEO John Krafcik tells reporters invited to the testing site here, a 3-hour drive from San Francisco.

Krafcik says the self-driving unit has been developing various types of autonomous vehicles for eight years and it developed a semi-autonomous guidance system that was “pretty good.”

But testing showed the better the system got, the more difficult handing control back to the driver becomes in an emergency. “The better you make it, the more people will check out (stop paying attention),” he says.

ELKHART, IN. – November marks 40 years since ASA Electronics opened their doors in the heart of the RV world -- Elkhart, Indiana. Over the last four decades, ASA has earned a sterling reputation developing electronics designed to handle specialty markets including RV, Marine, Commercial, and Heavy Duty applications and they’re continuing to build on that legacy.

“Although we did start out as a distributor, we became frustrated by the major electronics companies’ lax attitudes about developing products specifically for our target markets. So, by the mid-80s we started to develop our own designs and engineered solutions,” founder and CEO Tom Irions said. “Fast forward to today, we sell into several recreational and commercial markets under our own seven brand names. Our goal has always been to have the best engineered solutions for our customers. That quest continues to this day and will remain in the future.”

Through the years, that quest has included partnerships with trusted names like SiriusXM Satellite Radio, Harley-Davidson, and Klipsch as well as up-and-comers in the mobile technology field like XKGLOW.

“I’m very proud of how ASA has evolved into a world class technology company. We have always been fully committed to meeting the very specific needs of our customers and that’s what keeps us on top of our game,” said ASA Electronics President, Brent Barrow. “Our customer base spans several diverse markets with different wants and needs and this has challenged us to design, engineer, and manufacture more sophisticated and complex products for those customers. That’s a challenge we meet and exceed time and time again thanks to our very talented and dedicated team and top notch management in every department.”

ASA Electronics continues to create products that seamlessly integrate the convenience of modern technology into the camping experience. This is evident in the latest generation of their iN∙Command Control Systems and completely redesigned line of JENSEN® wallmount stereos, offering industry first features and a focus on App Control.

“We’re a company that has always been very focused on improving technology and thinking ahead to what RV owners – and end users in every industry, really – want and need from the technology we’re giving them,” said RV Industry Manager Jim Hess. “That’s how we’ve stayed in business for 40 years and we’re committed to keep pushing forward with innovative technology in the future.”

These latest products and more will be showcased at the RVIA National RV Trade Show in Louisville, Kentucky later this month. ASA Electronics is marking their milestone anniversary with a cocktail party and press conference on Tuesday, November 28th from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in booth 269 in the North Wing Lobby.

The “Hellbender” is the ultimate off-road event vehicle

Torrance, Calif. (Oct. 31, 2017) — Alpine Electronics today unveiled its newest demo vehicle, a 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited named “Hellbender.”  Hellbender debuted at the SEMA Show, currently being held in Las Vegas today through Nov. 3, 2017.

This customized Wrangler is ready to take the Alpine infotainment system anywhere, whether on the road or off the beaten track.  Since the Wrangler features several products that can withstand dust, mud, and water, the Hellbender name was chosen as a reference to the large, amphibious hellbender salamander.

“Our ongoing research with Wrangler owners revealed off-road usage needs that we’ve addressed through new products and features,” said Mike Anderson, vice president and general manager, aftermarket business unit, Alpine Electronics of America, Inc.  “This Wrangler showcases the functional aspect of the Alpine products in a fun and unique way.”

Features for Wrangler Fans

The Hellbender’s Alpine system is centered around the X209-WRA-OR weather resistant Restyle dash system for the 2011-2017 Jeep Wrangler.  The X209-WRA-OR infotainment system includes navigation, Bluetooth® wireless technology, Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, all controlled through the 9-inch touch screen.  The X209-WRA-OR is IP53 rated for protection against dust with limited ingress and fresh water spray up to 60° vertical, so the Wrangler can be driven with the top off even when Mother Nature has other plans.

The X209-WRA-OR has features favored by adventure-seeking Wrangler owners.  The off-road mode for navigation includes useful features like compass readings, vehicle tilt, tire pressure readings, route tracking on trails, and Points of Interest (POIs) on the way to trailheads.  Wrangler accessories like the light pods and winch can be controlled from the X209-WRA-OR’s touch screen, used with s-POD’s 8-circuit SE system and 300-LSHS accessory interface module along with the Alpine KAC-001 accessory controller.  Status feedback of these accessories is also available through the off-road mode.

No expedition is complete without music, and the Hellbender delivers.  Knowing that Wrangler owners often drive with the top off, the PSS-22WRA sound system is ready for inclement weather.  This 600-watt, weather resistant sound system is Alpine engineered for the 2007-2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and includes nine speakers, two compact amplifiers, and an enclosed subwoofer.  The various products have a minimum rating of IP55, so they can withstand rain from off-roading adventures or water from a rinse-off.

First of its Kind Collaborations

Alpine collaborated with Smittybilt, manufacturer of Jeep lifestyle accessories, on specific products for the Hellbender.  Debuting on the Hellbender are Smittybilt’s Apollo front and rear bumpers which seamlessly integrate and protect the Alpine HCE-2600FD4 multi-view front camera and the HCE-2100RD4 multi-view rear camera (cameras sold separately from the bumpers).  The cameras are IP68 rated so they’re protected from dust and water immersion.  The Alpine KCX-C250MC multi-camera selector allows the camera images to be controlled and switched from the X209-WRA-OR’s touch screen.  The Hellbender’s aggressive profile is highlighted by the custom exoskeleton that wraps around the vehicle and integrates with the Smittybilt rockers on the door steps.

For peace of mind away from home, the X209-WRA-OR works with the Alpine Connect app which links through subscription to Chamberlain Group’s MyQ app.  MyQ offers control and monitoring of home elements including Chamberlain® and LiftMaster® garage door openers, as well as smart lighting and other devices, and its partnership with Alpine is the first of its kind with an aftermarket electronics manufacturer.  This collaboration represents Alpine’s first step into the Internet of Things (IoT).

Other Smittybilt products on the Hellbender include SRC Gen 2 front and rear doors, Apollo fender flares, and the Stingray hood.  Procomp products on the Hellbender include Apex wheels, Xtreme MT2 tires (37x12.50R17), short arm suspension, head lights, and roof lights.

Fun on Arrival

The Hellbender is ready for fun when it arrives at its destination.  Two PWD-CB1 Alpine ICE (In-Cooler Entertainment) sit on a delivery platform that motorizes out from the bed and to the tailgate at a 90° angle, ready to distribute cold drinks.  Music streamed via the Alpine ICE’s Bluetooth connection is played through the cooler’s 180-watt sound system. When used at events, the Hellbender can send souvenirs to the crowd using the t-shirt gun turret installed on the roof.  A Ricoh Theta S 360° view camera is also installed on the roof to capture the crowd’s reaction at events.

The Hellbender was built by Define Customs of Orange, CA.  The vehicle is on display at the SEMA Show in the Smittybilt booth (South Hall, #35061) and will be used at Alpine consumer and retailer events throughout 2018.

Connectivity with Chamberlain Group’s MyQ® App Represents Alpine’s Launch into the Internet of Things

Torrance, Calif.  (Oct. 31, 2017) – Alpine Electronics of America, Inc., manufacturer of premium in-vehicle infotainment systems, announced a partnership with Chamberlain Group, a global leader in access solutions and manufacturer of Chamberlain® and LiftMaster® garage door opener brands. Several of Alpine’s aftermarket in-dash navigation systems can now control Chamberlain and LiftMaster residential garage door openers, as well as smart lighting controls and other devices, signifying Alpine’s launch into the Internet of Things (IOT).

“Over the past few years, we’ve increased the capabilities of our Alpine in-dash systems to allow control over other vehicle accessories,” said Mike Anderson, Vice President and General Manager, Alpine Brand Business division.  “Our partnership with Chamberlain Group and their MyQ app presents a logical progression for Alpine to now expand into the Internet of Things.”

“We’re proud to partner with Alpine to bring the convenience and capabilities of MyQ to their customers,” said Jim Trainor, Vice President & General Manager, Automotive, Chamberlain Group.  “Alpine users will benefit from the peace of mind that comes with monitoring and controlling home access from the comfort of their vehicle.”

The MyQ app allows users of internet-connected Chamberlain and LiftMaster MyQ-enabled garage door openers to check the status and control their garage door from anywhere with a smartphone or other internet-connected device.  The MyQ app can also turn on/off lights and can activate the “Home” or “Away” mode on Nest Learning Thermostats. The partnership with Chamberlain Group allows Alpine to offer products that are connected through the IOT by having MyQ controlled through the free Alpine Connect smartphone app.  Alpine Connect gathers select apps and optimizes them with a simple, vehicle-friendly interface for use on compatible Alpine navigation systems.  Once Alpine Connect is launched on the smartphone, the phone connects to the Alpine navigation system via Bluetooth for Android™ phones or USB for iPhone™. At that point, the content from the apps is fed through the Alpine interface and accessed through the Alpine touch screen.

Owners of select Alpine navigation systems can use MyQ on Alpine Connect to open their garage door as they’re approaching their home, turn on the lights so the house is lit when they enter, and activate the “Home” mode on their Nest Learning Thermostat so the house is at a comfortable temperature when they arrive -- all from the Alpine touch screen.  Some vehicles, like the Jeep Wrangler, do not have built-in keys to allow programming to a garage door remote control, so MyQ used through Alpine Connect becomes a handy feature for these vehicles.

The MyQ and Alpine Connect apps are available now on the App Store and Google Play for use in the U.S. and Canada. There is a subscription fee of $1/month or $10/year to link the MyQ app to Alpine Connect.  MyQ through Alpine Connect is compatible with these Alpine navigation systems:

  • 7-inch In-Dash Navigation System: models INE-W977HD, INE-W967HD
  • 8-inch In-Dash Navigation System for Select Vehicles or Custom Installation: models X208U, X108U
  • 9-Inch Alpine Restyle In-Dash Navigation System for 2011-2017 Jeep Wrangler: models X209-WRA, X109-WRA
  • 10-Inch Alpine Restyle In-Dash Navigation System for 2014-2017 Chevy Silverado: model X110-SLV
  • 10-Inch Alpine Restyle In-Dash Navigation System for 2014-2017 GMC Sierra: model X110-SRA

MyQ through Alpine Connect is on display in Alpine’s Jeep Wrangler demo vehicle at the SEMA Show, which is taking place today through November 3, 2017 in Las Vegas, NV.  The Wrangler is in the Smittybilt booth, South Hall Upper Level #35061.

The LXE300 series — which delivers up to 100,0000 lux, making it our brightest linear LED light — features a metal housing and includes Smart Vision Lights’ most advanced built-in Multi-Drive™ driver, allowing the light to operate continuously or in OverDrive™ strobe mode. The Multi-Drive also protects the LEDs from premature degradation and failure caused by excessive heat by regulating the current delivered to the LEDs and by limiting their duty cycle.

Other advanced features include the ability to connect up to six lights directly (end to end with no spacing between the lights) to create uniform-output, long linear lights for a fraction of the cost of a monolithic light. Users can also daisy-chain up to six LXE300 lights using a locking jumper cable to support different multi-light configurations.

The industry-standard 5-pin M12 connector makes for simple wiring, since external wiring to a driver is unnecessary, and the 1–10 V DC analog control line gives the user total control over intensity when running the light in continuous operation. The LXE300 also offers over-current protection, as well as PNP and NPN strobe input. The light is recommended for bright field, dark field, and direct lighting applications.

VISTA, Calif. (October 31, 2017) – Directed has announced improvements that enable lock and arm commands for their popular lines of 1-button remote controls for the new DS4 systems. Previously, 1-button remotes have been only capable of sending a remote start or unlock-while-remote-started command. Using its unique DS4 technology, Directed has developed 1-button remotes which can also send a lock or arm command. With this industry-first innovation, Directed’s 1-button remotes can for the first time be the main control method of a security system.

“One-button remote controls have been popular since their introduction and are appreciated by remote start customers who prefer not to part with their factory key fobs,” said Directed SVP Product Development & Technical Service James Turner. “But up until now, 1-buttons remotes did three things:  start the vehicle, unlock the vehicle when running, and provide ‘carfinder’ when not running.  We listened to the requests of our dealers and consumers, and using our recently launched DS4 Digital System, innovated to add lock and arm command capabilities.”

This feature is enabled on DS4 firmware and for the Viper 7816V 2-way and the Viper 7616V 1-way remotes. Technicians will know if a given firmware is compatible while flashing a DS4. The “unlock” icon is displayed next to the particular remote where compatible. While we expect this to be the preferred functionality, technicians will still have the option to flash the DS4 with the old command option.

HAUPPAUGE, NEW YORK – October 31, 2017 -–VOXX Electronics Corporation (VEC), announced it is now shipping the new Flashlogic FLRSBA and will showcase the product at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada October 31st – November 3rd 2017.

“We are very excited to begin shipping our first fully integrated remote start / security system with a built in FLCAN – the FLRSBA.  The FLRSBA was developed in conjunction with Automotive Data Solutions (ADS) and brings together the advanced technology of ADS with the core VOXX security and remote start features.”, said Aron Demers, Senior Vice President, VOXX Electronics Corporation.

Frank Barassi, President of Automotive Data Solutions Inc. (ADS), also stated, “VOXX and ADS have been great partners for over ten years. This valued relationship empowers us to together launch innovative remote start solutions. The FLRSBA is the culmination of years of effort and will launch with 102 different firmware sets, covering 7600+ vehicles, and designed to support many more advanced solutions coming soon. We are proud of the result and hope mobile electronic retailers and distributors embrace this product; and that we together continue to collaborate to ensure our industry sustains itself for the many years to come.”

The FLRSBA incorporates many of the patented VOXX features such as Real Panic Sound horn honk and Custom Code override.  It also has dual built-in data converters allowing dealers to add any Prestige, Code Alarm or Pursuit transmitter kit without needing an external data converter.  The FLRSBA is also CarLink compatible for telematics control.  VOXX will also be offering an advanced security option, the BASEC, that adds a siren with extended harness and access to the built-in digital tilt sensor.

The FLRSBA is t-harness compatible for low current remote start applications.  VOXX will also be releasing over 20 t-harness kits for thousands of vehicle applications – including Toyota and Mazda.  The support side of the “BA” is as impressive as the product.  We will have a uniquely custom vehicle by vehicle – wire by wire – installation guide for each vehicle application.

Demers continued.  “We are expanding the Vehicle Security / Remote Start & Data Start offering with the FLRSBA, not replace anything in the Prestige, Code Alarm, Pursuit or current Flashlogic Data Start line-up.  The FLRSBA can also replace our current “vehicle specific” data start systems, giving our dealers the option of a “one module” solution with different vehicle specific harnesses – increasing flexibility and reducing carrying costs.  However, we will still carry the majority of our complete kit module and harness applications – giving you a choice.  We want to give our dealers what they are asking for, and continue to lead the industry in bringing new innovative products to market”.

MSRP: $399.99
