The Hill -- Major vehicle manufacturers are telling Congress to keep its distance as the industry evolves to take advantage of the “Internet of cars.”

Representatives of Toyota, Tesla and GM are scheduled to testify before a House Oversight subcommittee on Wednesday, when they will tout the safety and comfort benefits of increasingly connected cars in prepared testimony.

“Regulation at a time of rapid innovation runs the risk of limiting the realization of the full extent of safety advances,” Tesla’s head of business development Diarmuid O’Connell will say when testifying Wednesday.

Increased regulation should be avoided unless “absolutely necessary,” he will say.

O’Connell said the Chrysler vulnerability could have been avoided if manufacturers ensured that their vehicles were not directly connected across the Internet. He also said connected cars must isolate their mechanical systems, such as braking, and make sure to use encryption technology to protect privacy of information transferred to and from vehicles.

“Tesla is seeing increased vehicle security interest and scrutiny from academic and industry security researchers,” he said. “Tesla encourages and applauds this assistance — to the extent of even providing financial rewards for the best research.”

The new EXO Series Exhaust and Pipe Wrap is a thermal wrap for headers and exhaust pipes that have repeated exposure to abrasion or high impact road or trail conditions. The EXO Series Wrap is designed to deliver both superior heat protection and resistance to harsh road, track or off road conditions, unlike any other wrap on the market today.

Developed for long-lasting durability, the EXO Series features a dual layer material constructed of high temperature glass fiber, encased in a 304 grade stainless steel exoskeleton—tough enough for the most extreme desert, dirt track or off-road conditions. With DEI’s new Air Gap technology, an insulating air barrier that keeps direct contact of the glass fiber wrap off the hot surface of the pipe, makes the EXO Series Exhaust and Pipe Wrap the preferred premium wrap for any truck or vehicle off-road or on the street.

The Exo Series Exhaust and Pipe Wrap is currently offered in both tan and black in a 1.5” width, and 10 and 20 foot lengths. Installation is made easier with the exterior exoskeleton that “locks in” when overlapped for a secure fit. Recommended use includes exhaust pipes, headers or for spot protection of pipes and components.

CNET -- Ford's had a change of heart. When every other automaker went running for smartphone apps that connected to a vehicle via an in-car modem, Ford chose to hold off, claiming the smartphone was the method for providing vehicles with Internet-based functionality. That's all changed with the release of Sync Connect, which will launch with the 2017 Ford Escape unveiled at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show.

"There's a recognition that we need to be multifaceted in regards to connectivity," said Don Butler, Ford's director of connected vehicles and services. "With where we see the industry going, built-in connectivity will become an increasing part of what we do. I think the approach that we've taken at Ford has been consistent with our customers and their needs."

Sync Connect is similar to apps from other automakers in that it allows the owner to access certain vehicle functions and information from the owner's own smartphone. Available features include remote lock and unlock, vehicle status including tire pressures and fuel level, vehicle location and remote start.

Its standout feature is the ability to remote start a vehicle according to a schedule. You can, for example, program your car to start at 7:15 every morning for your 7:30 departure. Other automakers offer remote-start capabilities, but none let you schedule it ahead of time. Ford also believes its user interface will help set it apart from its competitors.

The app will also receive over-the-air updates, which require the car to be running. However, you won't lose infotainment functionality while that happens. According to Ford, the updating takes place on a module that operates independently of the Sync 3 infotainment system, so the driver won't miss anything while it's happening.

Entrepreneur -- Time was when getting feedback from a customer was a process so complex, it was akin to getting blood out of a stone. Thankfully, we don’t live in those times.

Today, not only is feedback nothing more than an email away, but customers actively come to you with suggestions and ideas. In fact, theylove sharing their insights with you because they understand that the more feedback they give, the better your product becomes.

However, most of this feedback just ends up cooling its heels in hard drives, which is, well, tragic, considering all the good it can do. A motivational tool, a wall of love. . . the ideas are limited only by your imagination. Here are our top five cool things that you can spin off with customer feedback, to wow your customers and your own employees.

1. Drive product roadmap with feedback.

Take it from the experts: Your customers are the stars simply because they use your product day in and day out. No matter how hard you try to empathize and put yourself in their shoes, you'll never come up with some of the exciting ideas that occur to your "power users."

So, stop brainstorming and start following customer discussions on forums. Read support tickets, listen to feedback and, most important of all, record all the ideas you hear. Not only will your customers appreciate your willingness to listen and implement their ideas, but you will set yourself apart from your competitors, as a business that genuinely cares.

2. Create a 'wall of love.'

There's a world of difference between knowing that your customers love you and actually seeing proof of it. Create a wall of love containing all the amazing things your customers have said about you, your product and your service. Put it online to show your employees that what they do actually matters; it changes people’s lives for the better. You can even create a document with these testimonials and publish it online for potential customers to see just how trustworthy you are, how much you really care about them and their feedback. It also makes for excellent sales collateral.

A physical wall of love at your workplace won’t hurt either. In fact, we can’t think of a better motivation tool. Being able to walk by a wall and see how what you do matters: There can’t be a better motivation tool in existence.

Ford shifts its autonomous car program into a higher gear, announcing it will become the first automaker to test its self-driving cars at a new Michigan compound.

While the Detroit manufacturer has been working on both connected- and autonomous-car technologies for a decade, the new testing program at Mcity – a 32-acre faux metropolis in Ann Arbor, Mich. – reflects Ford’s recent move to upgrade its self-driving efforts from pure research to advanced engineering.

“We’ve been testing (autonomous) cars in the real world, but using a place like Mcity will allow us to refine our algorithms and better calibrate car sensors by repeating specific situations in a reliable way,” says Raj Nair, Ford’s vice president of global product development.

Mcity opened this past summer and is a joint project of the University of Michigan and the state’s Department of Transportation. Ford is one of a few large automakers contributing $1 million over three years to Mcity, which features storefronts, traffic lights, pedestrian zones and other real-world infrastructure to better train autonomous cars on how they need to react in a range of scenarios.

With the reality of streets humming with self-driving cars now more a matter of when than if, automakers and technology companies are looking for ways to accelerate their respective efforts.

Stinger RADAR USA, Inc. has recently launched in the US and Canada with its Stinger VIP line of RADAR Detector and Laser Jammer systems.

"As a newcomer to the US marketplace, but globally known for our state of the art RADAR and Laser technologies, we decided to take part in the well known RADAR testing event in April sponsored by RADAR Roy, taking 1st Place overall beating all of the best known RADAR Detectors from the top manufacturers some by as much as 3300 feet in detection range," said CEO Cliff Crane.

The Stinger VIP also was recognized as the Best RADAR Detector at testing performed in September by the well know RDF Forum and was awarded a 9.5/10 by the RALETC Forum for RADAR and Laser performance, their highest rating.

The Stinger VIP is the only RADAR Detector with a smart-phone like credit card sized touch screen display. This allows for easy to understand RADAR and laser alert screens and enables users to make any programming changes intuitively without having to refer to an Owner’s Manual. The display can easily be integrated into the vehicle’s interior or be hidden away if need be.

The Stinger VIP’s advanced, military type HD flat patch antenna, less than 1/2 inch thick, is also another industry exclusive. The HD antenna allows for far easier installations than the older and more cumbersome horn type antennas that have been the norm for the past 40 years.

Stinger has also introduced its HD Lasers for jamming police laser that integrates seamlessly with the Stinger VIP. Stinger's tiny, 3rd generation, dime sized lasers are not only extremely effective against traditional police laser guns but, more importantly, against the newest police laser gun technologies which other integrated detectors simply cannot detect nor jam. Stinger’s revolutionary 3mm fiber optic laser transmitter, also allows for the most discrete of laser jammer installations on exotic cars or other vehicles where traditionally larger sized lasers appearance just won’t please their owners.

The Stinger VIP is fully user updateable via a USB drive and our Stinger Desktop application for either Mac or PC without having to be removed from the car. The Stinger’s modular system makes for the least invasive installation of any other integrated product on the market today requiring only a single USB Type B cable to run through the firewall reducing installation time as well as making for the most visually pleasing install for those finicky customers and for vehicles that simply do not allow for easy installations.

DD Audio has released the Z-Wire RCA System. It’s the latest addition to a growing line of DD installation accessories. The Z-Wire accessories are aimed at setting the standard in the power and source signal supply chain cabling.

The system allows the interconnect cables to be built to the exact length needed resulting in an aesthetically clean installation. Once the interconnect cable is cut to the correct length, installers can fit the crimpless and solderless RCA connectors onto the cable.

For the heart of this cable we use a 24 gauge, 42 strand, oxygen free stranded copper center conductor. This results in an ultra low impedance cable that stays very flexible.

The interconnect cable features 5-way noise rejection. The center conductor is double isolated via a gas injected dielectric, and a conductive PVC jacket. By double insulating the the center conductor there is minimal signal loss and greater electrical noise rejection. The cable is triple shielded with a tinned copper faraday sheath, and a bifoil aluminum bonded polyester film which together provide 100% shielding coverage. By utilising two different shielding methods both EMI and RFI noise rejection is increased.

The multiple components of this technologically advanced cable are held together with a soft touch PVC jacket that’s rugged, yet stays very flexible.
