New Tag Allows Drivers To Pay Tolls in 19 States

NJ.com, May 25, 2016 -- A new toll tag which drivers will eventually be able to use to pay electronically for highway, bridge and tunnel charges across the country was launched Monday by a Nashville company.

Currently, National Pass will allow drivers to pay tolls in 19 states, including N.J., said Mimi McHale, director of marketing for TransCore, which is offering National Pass.

"We just went live today. This is just for frequent travelers in their personal vehicles," she said. "Anyone can go to Nationalpass.net website to sign up for this service, which benefits those frequent travelers who drive outside of their tolling region."

While E-Z Pass is accepted in northeastern states, drivers can't use it to pay a toll in Florida, where a National Pass would be accepted in both regions, McHale said.

The 19 states now accepting National Pass include New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, California and Texas. Three more, including Florida, will be added by July. Drivers can sign-up starting in July, she said.

National Pass will cost drivers more than E-Z Pass, including a $35 fee to buy the tag and a $7.99 per month service charge for monthly toll charges up to $50 and a $10.99 fee for tolls between $50 to $100, according to the National Pass website.  It operates similar to E-Z Pass, where customers maintain a balance in their accounts to pay tolls.
