The new receivers were designed intentionally for Jeep®

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (Jan. 06, 2022) – Alpine Electronics of America, Inc. introduces two new 9” Weather-Resistant Jeep® receivers, the i509-WRA-JL for the new 2018-Up Jeep® Wrangler and 2020-Up Jeep® Gladiator and the i509-WRA-JK for the 2011-2018 Jeep® Wrangler. The new receivers were designed for plug-and-play installation while featuring High-Resolution Audio Playback, High-Resolution Display, and wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™.

“Alpine has a unique relationship with the Jeep® customer, and with that relationship in mind, we craft mindful solutions made to enhance the Jeep® lifestyle.” said Mike Anderson, Vice President and General Manager, Brand Business Unit, Alpine Electronics of America, Inc. “We believe the new Jeep® Receivers will take the Jeep® driving experience to the next level.”

Go Beyond Expectation

Since 2015, Alpine has attended countless Jeep® -specific events and gathered first-hand customer feedback to craft the perfect solution for the Jeep® vehicle. Through intentional upgrades, along with a deep understanding of the customer, our next-generation Jeep® dash technology includes High-Resolution specs that will enhance the Jeep® driving experience.

The all-new i509-WRA-JL and i509-WRA-JK Weather-Resistant Receivers feature High-Resolution Audio Playback and Jeep® -specific tuning to bring out the full potential of music in the Jeep®. They also include a WXGA High-Resolution, Anti-Glare Display (1280x720px) for enhanced performance.

Features like Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, and built-in Bluetooth® hands-free calling with audio streaming allows access to music, messages, phone calls, and maps on a smartphone via either a wired USB connection or wirelessly. These features are controlled through touch or voice commands with the included external microphone.

An industry-first for aftermarket receivers, the i509-WRA-JL and i509-WRA-JK feature SiriusXM 360L, which combines satellite and streaming content delivery for even more choices in entertainment than before (SXV300 Connect Vehicle Tuner Kit sold separately; SiriusXM subscription required). Built-in HD Radio® is also included for additional entertainment options.

Designed for Jeep®

By learning the pain points and priorities of the Jeep® customer, Alpine has been able to craft solutions that were designed specifically for Jeep®. The 9” display is housed in a Jeep® -specific trim bezel that emulates the look and feel of the Jeep® dash. A Jeep® -specific harness is included with the receiver to take out the guesswork during installation and make it a true plug-and-play solution. The displays feature a Jeep® -specific opening screen and LED color scheme for a consistent design with factory Jeep® settings.

As most Jeep® customers enjoy driving with the top off, the display is also weather-resistant (rated IP53 for dust and ingress) for uninterrupted performances in any driving condition.

Upgrading dash technology can often result in a loss of factory functionality such as steering wheel controls and access to engine codes. However, the i509-WRA-JL and i509-WRA-JK are compatible with the iDatalink® Maestro Module (sold separately) allowing select factory features like voice-activated media player, Bluetooth® technology, and steering wheel controls to be retained and vehicle information displayed on the screen. The iDatalink® can also integrate with the Jeep® diagnostic port so select vehicle information like tire pressure, battery voltage, door status, engine codes, and user-customizable gauges can be monitored on the display.

Exciting System Expandability Options

Whether commuting or off-roading, avoid obstacles in the road with the included front and rear camera inputs to add a front or rearview camera (sold separately) to the i509-WRA-JK. The rearview camera includes a distance guide display that overlays guidelines onto the screen for ease when moving in reverse. Multiple camera angles can be viewed with the KCX-C2600B Universal Front and Rear Camera Selector (sold separately). The i509-WRA-JL retains the factory rear-view camera for the new 2018-Up Jeep® Wrangler and 2020-Up Jeep® Gladiator.

Take driving safety even further with the DVR-C320R Premium 1080P Front and Rear Dash Camera with built-in drive assist (sold separately), compatible with the i509-WRA-JL and i509-WRA-JK.

While the i509-WRA-JL and i509-WRA-JK do not have built-in navigation, the new KTX-NS01 Navigation Module (sold separately) provides seamless, on-and-off-road navigation, as an option. This is delivered through the Navigation Module, designed to plug into the receiver via USB connection for a convenient way to access the latest maps on the display.

Integrated tuning features bring out the full potential of music playback with a 5-band graphic EQ or 13-band parametric EQ per channel, for continuous frequency control. The 6-channel time correction capability ensures that music is staged properly in the front and center of the vehicle. The subwoofers feature Alpine’s next-generation R-Series Subwoofers

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (Jan. 07, 2022) – Alpine Electronics of America, Inc. introduces the next-generation Alpine Halo R2-Series Preloaded Subwoofer Enclosures with ProLink™. The enclosures come preloaded with Alpine’s new 10” and 12” R2-Series subwoofers that feature an all-new design to offer cleaner, more controlled bass response.

“Alpine believes in the constant pursuit of better sound,” said Mike Anderson, Vice President and General Manager, Brand Business Unit, Alpine Electronics of America, Inc. “Adding the next-gen R2-Series subwoofers to our Alpine Halo enclosures is just one step towards getting the most premium sound experience in the vehicle.

Deeper Bass Output

Since its introduction, Alpine’s R-Series sound system family has been known for incredible output and outstanding performance. Today Alpine introduces the next-generation of sound performance with the new R2-Series subwoofers, featured in the Alpine Halo R2-Series Preloaded Subwoofer Enclosures with ProLink™.

These next-generation R2-Series Subwoofers feature larger, double-stacked magnets, which results in an increase of 5%-8% more motor strength in the subwoofer compared to the previous generation. This increase in motor strength produces a wider frequency band in the subwoofer, which will in turn play deeper bass with more authority. The new R2 design also delivers improved control over the moving subwoofer cone for tighter, cleaner bass response.

Additional design improvements to the subwoofers include a new ceramic composite dust cap that is lightweight, yet rigid and provides incredible internal damping (vibration absorption) to smooth out the frequency response and reproduce tight bass. This premium, unique material also has a higher heat capacity that contributes to the non-stop bass performance customers have come to expect from Alpine’s R-Series system.

The new R2-Series subwoofers contain Alpine’s High Amplitude Multi-Roll (HAMR) Surround Technology. This rubber surround allows the subwoofer cone to efficiently move air while staying cool, which also contributes to increased output from the subwoofers.

The new design and enhanced performance of the next-generation R2-Series subwoofers results in a cleaner, more controlled bass response from the Alpine Halo R2-Series Preloaded Subwoofer Enclosures with ProLink™. The ported enclosures feature an optimized vent and rounded internal port edges that maximize the output performance of the subwoofer, for deeper, reliable bass. Each enclosure is also wired for optimized performance with Alpine’s R-Series R-A75M Mono Power Amplifier.

Unique ProLink® Technology

Traditionally, single and dual subwoofer enclosures are sold as independent systems, leaving no room for flexibility when it comes to sound system building. If a single subwoofer enclosure was originally purchased, the only option for adding more bass to the system was to remove the single subwoofer enclosure and purchase a new, dual subwoofer enclosure.

Alpine’s unique ProLink™ technology was designed with the sound system builder in mind. ProLink™ allows more flexibility in both power and price to start with a single subwoofer enclosure and add an additional subwoofer using a Linking Kit (sold separately) to link two enclosures together to create a dual system when more bass is desired.

Groundbreaking Alpine Halo Design

The Alpine Halo R2-Series Preloaded Subwoofer Enclosures with ProLink™ share the premium, unmistakable design of the Alpine Halo Family. The enclosures pull design cues from the Alpine Halo Display with unique, curved edges outlined by a silver trim and a front baffle for a matching system aesthetic. Built with sturdy, 3/4” MDF construction and covered in a premium black carpet, these enclosures give the impression of a custom look, without the custom work.

The R2-SB12V and R2-SB10V will ship in January 2022 at a MAP of $449.95 and $429.95 respectively.

The next-generation R2-Series Subwoofers featured in the Alpine Halo R2-Series Preloaded Subwoofer Enclosures with ProLink™ will also be available as separate components in an 8” option for $219.95 (R2-W8D4, R2-W8D2) 10” for $299.95 (R2-W10D4, R2-W10D2), and 12” for $349.95 (R2-W12D4, R2-W12D2).

All products will be available at Alpine Authorized retailers and at Preferred Online Stores. Installation options can be found on the Alpine-USA website through the store locator.

The subwoofers feature Alpine’s unique ProLink™ technology

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (Jan. 06, 2022) – Alpine Electronics of America, Inc. introduces two new Dual 8” Alpine Halo Preloaded Truck Subwoofer Enclosures with ProLink™. The enclosures come preloaded with Alpine’s 8” S-Series (S-DB8V-TRK) and R2-Series (R2-DB8V-TRK) subwoofers and feature an adjustable linking design.

“The compact and flexible design of our new Truck Enclosures give us a competitive edge when it comes to adding enhanced bass performance to the unique environment of the truck,” said Mike Anderson, Vice President and General Manager, Brand Business Unit, Alpine Electronics of America, Inc.
Designed for Trucks
From towing to travel, customers rely on their trucks to get them to their destination. Now they can have an equally reliable subwoofer enclosure that will enhance the driving experience without compromising valuable cabin space. The Truck Subwoofer Enclosures were intentionally designed for the space underneath the backseat. Two 8” subwoofers are preloaded into a compact enclosure for under-the-seat installation and linked with a ProLink™ bracket that can adjust from 50”-40” to fit most full-size truck applications as well as select Jeep® Wrangler and Jeep® Gladiator applications. Height-adjustable “feet” accommodate uneven truck floors for a secure install. Centered on the enclosures is an integrated amplifier mount tray that’s optimized for Alpine’s mono power amplifiers. This convenient design ensures that the entire system can be installed underneath the seat.
High-Performance Subwoofers
Each enclosure comes preloaded with high-performance subwoofers that are tuned for the unique cabin environment of the truck and add deep, accurate bass to the sound system. The ported enclosures house 8” S-Series (S-DB8V-TRK) or R2-Series (R2-DB8V-TRK) subwoofers that provide options in both power and price. The 600W RMS S-DB8V-TRK was designed for optimum performance at an approachable price while the 750W RMS R2-DB8V-TRK features deeper, more authoritative bass that can be played at higher volumes. The enclosures were designed with dual voice coil drivers, wired in parallel for a 2Ω load to take the guesswork out of choosing an amplifier that’s compatible in power rating.

The new Truck Subwoofer Enclosures join the Alpine Halo Family with a premium, unmistakable design. "It's important to recognize that making it to the Top 12, Top 5 and Top 3 categories signals a major achievement in this industry," he explained. "It means that these individuals, stores, brands and companies are part of a unique group that represents the best of our industry. We're overdue in recognizing the significance of their efforts, and I am proud to create a special event for that purpose.

Some of the award categories are decided solely on industry votes. For these, the top vote-getter will be announced at KnowledgeFest as the ultimate winner of the category. For the Top 12 retailers, Top 12 Installers, Top 5 Technicians, Top 5 Rookies, and Top 5 Sales Professionals, each recipient will need to submit additional materials for judging to determine the winner in each category.

The finalists lists can be viewed at meindustryawards.com by clicking on the Winners tab and selecting '2022' winners. To view the 2022 Industry Awards Finalists Presentation, visit the Mobile Electronics magazine page on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/MobileElectronics. The final awards will be announced at the Mobile Electronics Industry Awards celebration during the KnowledgeFest trade show and conference in Las Vegas, February 20, 2022. Holly Hill, Fla. – December 21, 2021 – Heise LED Lighting Systems® by Metra Electronics® is now shipping its next generation of Blackout Series lightbars, driving and cube lights, featuring refined frames, cleaner lines, and upgraded optics. The optics have changed from a direct placement to an indirect placement, allowing more control of the location and pattern of the beam. This allows the lights to be tailored to the vehicle, its entire lighting system, and for the driver’s lighting coverage needs. Heise is also shipping its new heavy-duty Edgeless Series of work and driving lights that combine form and function for a sleek appearance that doesn’t compromise performance. Just in time for winter, a heated work LED light has also joined Heise’s new product lineup, and adding to the existing Infinite Series line of RGB backlit lights is a new 5-inch flush mount cube. These new lights were introduced at the 2021 SEMA Show and are now shipping.

Blackout Series Lightbars

A new and improved design and upgraded optics make the latest generation of Heise’s Blackout Series a versatile lighting solution. Function meets style with refined frames and cleaner lines for a sleek yet minimalistic look. The hybrid 90-degree flood and 8-degree spot beam pattern combination delivers intense spotlights in the center flanked by widebeam lights on each side. Available as a dual-row lightbar in 8, 14, 20, 22, 32, 42, and 50-inch lengths, or as a single-row slimline lightbar in 9.5, 20.5, 31.5, 39.5, and 50.5-inch lengths.

Blackout Series Driving Lights and Cubes (Standard and Flush Mount)

Heise’s Blackout Series driving lights and high output cube LED lights are small but powerful for better coverage at night. These lights also have the next-generation improved Blackout Series design with upgraded optics for more control of the location and pattern of the beam. Two IP67 rated options for driving lights feature an intense 15-degree spot beam pattern and 6 LEDs, available in a standard or flush mount option. The IP67 rated cube lights are available in various spot or flood beam patterns, sold as a set, and include the HE-DLWH1 dual light wiring harness for installation. Flush mount options are also available and sold individually without a harness.

Edgeless Series Work and Driving Lights

The new Edgeless Series features lights with a clean, edgeless frame with no screws on the front face for a sleek appearance that doesn’t compromise performance. This new series features four new spot beam pattern lights in 7 or 9-inch round options, the HE-EL3 and HE-EL4, a 4-inch driving light option, the HE-EL2, and a 5-inch work light, the HE-WL5. The new Edgeless Series also features a rectangular work area light with a flood beam pattern, the HE-WLAF.

Heated Work Light

Designed for winter, the heated feature in Heise’s new HE-WL4H light helps to melt the frost and prevent snow from covering the light and reducing visibility. This heavy-duty work flood light is designed for off-road, rugged, and dark night conditions to illuminate the path for a better drive. This 4.3-inch light is sold individually and has a 75-degree flood beam pattern with 9600 raw lumens.

Infinite Series Flush Mount RGB Cube Light

Heise’s popular RGB backlit LED lights, the Infinite Series, now has a flush mount cube light option for the perfect fit inside the bumper. Light colors can be changed with the swipe of a finger, with pure white light and 16 million selectable colors as a backlight, controlled by a smartphone app. The HE-FMICL2 cube light requires Metra’s RGB-CB1 controller, which is sold separately and required for RGB operation. This light is compatible with the entire Heise Infinite Series and can be synced with other Heise or Metra RGB lights that use the same RGB-CB1 controller.

All of Heise’s new lights are now shipping and more information and specifications can be seen at HeiseLED.com. Heise LED lights are sold for off-road use only. These products should not be used on public roads.

STILLWATER, USA – KICKER® is deeply saddened to announce the unexpected passing of colleague Rob Limbaugh. Limbaugh departed this life Friday while at home. An 18-year KICKER employee and longtime industry veteran, Limbaugh first served as National Sales Director at Stillwater Designs, ultimately ascending to Director of Business Development and Vice President.

“He was an amazing visionary for the big picture,” said KICKER President and co-founder Steve Irby. “We will certainly miss his contributions, his viewpoints, and his insightful plans.”

While under Limbaugh’s watch, KICKER expanded the Marine and Powersports lines of products, formed the Home and Portables division, and relocated 200 employees into the company’s new world headquarters in Stillwater, Okla. He was instrumental in keeping KICKER relevant into the 21st century, playing an essential part of moving KICKER products into big-box retail and developing KICKER’s current UMAP (Unilateral Minimum Advertised Pricing) policy so dealers could grow their revenue.

He also got the KICKER brand involved in his auto passion, One Lap of America, for several years, and he co-drove a BMW during the 2018 road-course race.

Limbaugh started his audio career in 1975 at Pacific Stereo in Fresno, Calif. His passion for audio led him to be vice president at Linear Power for six years. After that he led Polk Audio’s car-audio division for more than a decade before joining KICKER’s sales team.

“Rob was always extremely sharp,” said KICKER Director of Global Supply Chain Greg Lew. “He loved going to soundoffs. He loved loud audio. He was witty, trustworthy, and a great friend – somebody you could chat with and challenge.”

Behind his famously dry wit and wry smile, Limbaugh was known to be a deep thinker and consistent voice among KICKER leadership.

“He had an amazing mind for seeing the overall plan,” recalled KICKER General Manager Jay Ralston. “He was an integral part of every major decision and had a gift for considering all the angles.”

“He was always presenting a bigger picture solution and played that role very well,” Irby said. “It’s important to have a diversity of opinions in a company to make balanced decisions, and we could always count on Rob. He will definitely be missed.”

KICKER Performance Audio products, a division of Stillwater Designs and Audio, Inc.®, are available for the mobile and home audio aftermarket at authorized retailers worldwide, and also as Original Equipment for boat and automobile manufacturers. Consumers seeking more information on KICKER or Livin’ Loud® may call the Consumer Information Line at 1-800-256-5425 or visit the brand website at www.kicker.com. Provides low-cost add-on cruise control solution for XL model vehicle with optional speed-limiting capabilities for all Maverick trim levels

ABERDEEN, North Carolina – December 16, 2021 – Rostra Accessories continues to innovate by adding to the company’s cruise control and speed-limiting product by including applications for the 2022 year-model Ford Maverick. Rostra’s cruise control system can be quickly added to XL models vehicles, which are manufactured without this feature, and allow fleet owners the opportunity to save on fuel costs and vehicle wear-and-tear through more consistent highway driving speeds. Likewise, Rostra’s speed-limiting systems, available for XL®, XLT®, and Lariat® model Mavericks, are a onetime purchase which provide a hard-wired solution to setting a maximum speed for a vehicle which, once installed, cannot be modified by the driver and does not require a full-scale, subscription-based telematics suite.

“Rostra is the pioneer and leader of add-on cruise control and speed-limiting systems having spent nearly three decades developing vehicle-specific solutions for the most popular fleet trucks and vans on the road,” said Aron Demers, Senior Vice President, VOXX Electronics Corporation.

With the addition of applications for the industrious 2022 Ford Maverick, Rostra adds yet another way for fleet owners to feel confident that their vehicles are not being subjected to undue stress while in operation, reduce the possibility of speed infractions, added Demers. Rostra’s standard cruise control system, which includes a stalk-style control switch that mounts to the left-hand side of the steering column shroud, is available as part number 250-9661.

Rostra’s vehicle speed-limiters are offered with four standard pre-programmed maximum speed settings with custom speed limits available upon request from fleets. Speed-limiting part numbers include: 250-9861-65 (65 MPH speed limit) 250-9861-70 (70 MPH speed limit) 250-9861-75 (75 MPH speed limit) 250-9861-80 (80 MPH speed limit) For more information, please visit rostra.com or email Rostra directly at This email address is being protected from spambots. RINGWOOD, Ill. – December 17, 2021 -- (Patent No. 11,054,127) (Patent No. 10,801,714)

Race Sport Lighting is pleased to announce the patented and innovative GEN4® LED High Performance LED Kits are in stock and shipping to resellers! The 1st Generation of GEN4® kits were launched in 4th quarter 2019, after US Patent No. 10,801,714 was issued in October of 2019. North American dealers were raving over the new technology and the GEN4® was an instant success with resellers looking to sell the best of the best when it comes to forward lighting systems. The line took a hit when COVID struck North America in early 2020 and shut down its assembly lines. Race Sport Lighting moved the tooling to their main factory and made some improvements to its new generation and was awarded Patent No. 11,054,127 by the USPTO in October 2020.

The GEN4® patented lighting system features a 360° ratchet-style adjustable base for perfect aiming adjustments for installers to make sure their consumers are set up right for the road. The product also includes an anti-glare optical beam deflector on the tower body designed to keep the light output perfectly aimed down the road, and out of the eyes of oncoming drivers on-road. The patented design also features the “Medusa Style” rotatable heat-sink rope for heat dissipation in tight lens/cover locations with ZERO clearance. All this while boasting 2,700lx/bulb (5,400lx/kit) of high-performance light out of the lens.

“We are excited to be shipping the GEN4® LED High Performance system to the marketplace with a few upgraded adjustments that will increase the performances even more. We are thankful to the USPTO for awarding a second patent and recognizing a lot of hard work put into this kit. Resellers who sell and install the best of the best in each category are going to go crazy for the GEN4® LED kit to serve them well in the forward lighting category,” said Steve Jergensen, President of Race Sport Lighting.

Installing a correctly designed forward lighting system is key to providing each customer the best possible product for their vehicle. Too many resellers are settling for low price over-the-counter China concepts that fail to give customers the best forward lighting in their vehicles. The GEN4® LED kit is one-of-a-kind, US engineered, patented, and tested to provide the absolute best performance on each and every vehicle. The Race Sport Lighting LED Headlight line up continues to evolve and provide the marketplace with not only a great quality product, but solutions that work and are proven.

Race Sport Lighting is the leading manufacturer of LED and HID lighting technology in North America, and serves the 12-Volt, Truck Accessory, Powersports, Motorcycle, Marine, and RV industries primarily. Founded in 2007, Race Sport Lighting is going on its 15th year leading the way as the Pioneer for the lighting category. They offer the highest quality lighting products to the industry and back it up with award winning customer service and tech support. This reputation has earned them the position of Preferred Lighting Vendor for AutoGear, AAM Group, MESA, Tint World franchises, and Restylers International just to name a few in the industry.

Holly Hill, Fla. – December 10, 2021 – It is with great sadness and tremendous respect that Metra Electronics Corporation® announces the passing of its founder and innovator, Mr. Michael M. Somma. Metra’s president, Bill Jones, offered the following words as a tribute to honor the life of Mr. Somma:

“As Metra is celebrating its 75th year in business, his passing is even more bittersweet. But, we at Metra choose to celebrate his life rather than posting a simple obituary. His life was much more than that. His life was Metra, and thus, if you will indulge me, I’d like to offer you a kind remembrance of a man that meant so much to me and all of us, but especially the industry he helped to father and promote. Michael Somma was a man of simple means born to a hard-working Italian immigrant family living in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn, New York. He was brought up with six sisters and his father worked at Steeplechase Park from 1913 until its closing in the 1960s. His mother tended to the upbringing of seven children and kept a loving household. Michael Somma was a true pioneer and a genius of the 6volt and 12volt car radio industry. He will be missed by his family, his friends, and the industry as a whole. Somma was 94 years of age at his passing. He saw the tremendous changes in our business since Metra's founding in 1946 on Coney Island Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.

Somma started out by opening a television sales and service shop with his brother-in-law, Sal Izzo, after serving proudly and with honor in the United States Navy in World War II. He was a graduate of Brooklyn Technical School, where he learned electrical and mechanical engineering skills. Somma built and sold his first television while attending school, which became his first official TV sale. It must have worked well! After the war, where he served as a radioman, he knew where his passion and interests would be best utilized, and thus, Metra Radio and TV was founded.

In the 1940s, Metra Radio and TV initially focused on selling television sets and home radios more so than car radios, as the demand for TVs was much greater and more lucrative at the time. Nevertheless, they went on to sell and install numerous car radios because cars at this time did not come equipped with a radio and the option from the factory was, as it is now, an expensive addition. Installing a car radio was a time-consuming and complex undertaking. These trials and tribulations gave Somma the idea of standardizing the design and creation of kits instead of tackling each installation one at a time.

Several innovations at the time pushed Metra’s focus more towards automotive. From the beginning, Metra was a Blaupunkt car radio dealer. Blaupunkt made great car radios and was the first to introduce FM to their units. Although not many FM stations existed at the time, the ones that did, offered a clearer and static-free broadcast. Although AM technology was still the rule and FM the exception up until the 1970s, Somma's forward-thinking saw the potential on the broader bandwidth of FM and its ability to attain Hi-Fidelity sound, as it was called at that time.

Somma’s other innovation was the manufacturing of car radio installation kits, which greatly facilitated an easier installation of car radios. At the beginning of car radio installations, it could take two men several hours to install the earlier and primitive units. Somma used his considerable mechanical skills to fashion Metra's earliest kits out of metal and find whatever way he could fasten the radio to the car. As a perfectionist, the installations were always top-notch.

One of the events that genuinely catapulted Metra to its glory was the change in New York regulations by the Taxi and Limousine Commission, allowing taxi cabs to legally have radios in their cabs. Prior to this, many states and municipalities outlawed radio use as they felt it would be a distraction to the driver. This change led Metra to pre-fabricate kits as their radio and installation business took off!

Soon, the car radio side of the business became more lucrative than selling TVs, and thus was born the new division, Metra Electronics. As more installations kept coming in, the need for a bigger facility became apparent. The solution was to move to a larger headquarters on McDonald Avenue in Brooklyn. This was the time of the "two Metras," and the original store remained open and focused strictly on television repair and sales, run by Sal Izzo. Izzo was cautious of betting on just car audio and felt better suited to TV repairs and sales.

As the 1950s rolled on, more and more installations meant fabricating more radio kits. This is where Somma’s talents came into play, thinking of the bigger picture outside of Brooklyn. He reasoned early on that there were 48 other states going through the same hassle to fabricate brackets and trim panels for radio installations. Metra’s complete car radio installation kit for dealers was born. This is not to say that Metra was the only company thinking the same thoughts. Still, Somma’s boldness led him to eliminate the installation bays and fill them with machinery and equipment to manufacture the myriad of kits required to fit the many different types of cars on the road. He hired engineers and designers, set up a shipping department, and hired a sales and marketing staff to take Metra nationwide. Although it wasn't always easy, his persistence paid off and Metra Electronics became a great success!

As time went by, Metra went full circle and introduced a line of car radios called MetraVox in the early 1960s that included 4-track players, AM and FM radio, and eventually became a public company in 1969. It was a highly successful line until the field became very crowded and technology-laden. MetraVox’s radios, which were manufactured in Italy and Japan, were discontinued as Somma determined that the true profit center was in the installation kit business.

In closing, let's not forget the true pioneer who was way ahead of his time. Michael M. Somma ranks up there with Armstrong, Lear, Shalam, and the rest,” says Jones. “May he rest in peace and I hope he is smiling down upon us watching his creation thriving after 75 great years,” he concluded. AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (Dec. 08, 2021) – Alps Alpine Co., Ltd. a leading manufacturer of electronic components and automotive infotainment systems, and its domestic marketing division Alpine Electronics of America, Inc., is now shipping the third generation of AlpineF#1Status.

The Pinnacle of Car Audio

When it comes to experiencing music, nothing compares to a live performance. From incredible details like the breath of the artist between passages to the electrifying energy felt in the beat of every kick drum, live music creates an unparalleled emotional experience in every song. Now, this level of performance can be experienced in a vehicle with AlpineF#1Status System.

AlpineF#1Status is the first complete premium car audio system that can reproduce Hi-Resolution Audio Playback, bringing the experience of a live performance closer than ever before inside the challenging vehicle interior environment, making it the pinnacle of car audio.

High-Resolution Audio Playback

AlpineF#1Status represents the best that car audio technology can offer using the most important medium at the time. The first generation of AlpineF#1Status in 2001 focused on perfecting Compact Disc (CD) reproduction, the highest spec of its time (44.1kHz x 16bit). In 2004, the second generation shifted to DVD Audio™, which exceeded CD in data storage and playback quality. The third and current generation of AlpineF#1Status addresses the future of car audio: High-Resolution Audio (Hi-Res).

AlpineF#1 Status is the first car audio system in the industry to achieve 384kHz/32bit Hi-Res Audio Playback, the highest recording spec possible in a car audio system. This is more than 17 times the amount of digital audio data in a standard CD (44.1kHz x 16bit) and exceeds the standard Hi-Res spec (192kHZ x 24 bit). Hi-Res Audio Playback reproduces the details that are lost in lower-quality, compressed file formats. These details, like the breath of the artist or subtle interactions with the instruments, contribute to a listening experience that was once previously exclusive to a live performance.

As consumer listening habits shift from CD to digital streaming services, Hi-Res Audio Playback is quickly becoming the new benchmark for music reproduction. AlpineF#1Status exceeds the standards for this level of performance. To deliver this experience, each component in the system was designed in perfect synchronization to handle the ultra-Hi-Res audio files.

Unique Hi-Res Audio Source

To achieve 384kHz/32bit Hi-Res Audio Playback, AlpineF#1Status needed a source and a method that could get this level of Hi-Res audio files in the vehicle. Alpine partnered with Astell & Kern to create a custom, portable Digital Audio Player (DAP) for the AlpineF#1Status system. The DAP-7909 can host up to 780 Hi-Res files and is compatible with a variety of audio formats (.Wav, .Flac, AAC, etc.).

The DAP connects directly with the AlpineF#1Status Head Unit via USB. Longtime fans of the Alpine brand will appreciate the six-button “chiclet” design of the AlpineF#1Status HDS-7909 Head Unit Commander. The HDS-7909 controls the media on the DAP-7909 and sends the digital content to the HDP-H900 Digital Signal Processor (DSP) via a custom A2B data bus, which supports the Hi-Res Audio spec. As a bonus, the DAP can also be used as a standalone audio player.

The Workhorse of the System

To reproduce a live performance experience in the challenging vehicle interior environment is no easy feat. From the off-center positioning of the listener to the variety of materials in the cabin and even the internal cabin temperature, the vehicle introduces acoustic challenges that contribute to a lower quality sound experience.

To overcome these challenges, the AlpineF#1Status system features an HDP-H900 Digital Signal Processor (DSP) with the industry’s first Master Clock Management System, a high-performance crystal clock housed in an oven-controlled case at the heart of the DSP. Every component in the AlpineF#1Status system references this clock which results in ultra-Hi-Res playback without any jitter (timing errors) in the system, which is common in a system with independent components.

The HDP-H900 runs up to 1GHz/64Bit, comparable to the processing power of a high-end computer’s central processing unit (CPU), to achieve accurate sound tuning for High-Resolution audio playback at 384kHz/32Bit. High-performance sound processing gives the acoustic system tuner the tools to ensure that each speaker’s sound arrives at the listener’s ears at the same time, while also accounting for the vehicle’s unique interior environment, to maintain the integrity of the sound and ensure accurate High-Resolution Playback. The results are perfect synchronization and music that stays faithful to the artist's original intentions.

Once the files are processed, the signal is sent to the HDA-F900 4-Channel Amplifier via Pro Audio Balanced XLR cables, which allows a full eight volts to be sent with virtually no noise and results in the most accurate sound reproduction possible.

Unified Speaker Material

Hi-Res Audio Playback requires that every speaker component plays within its optimal frequency band. From the tweeter to the subwoofer, the AlpineF#1Status HDZ-9000 4-way speaker system uses the same high-performance cone material, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP).

By using the same cone material throughout the speaker system, rather than using a specific material or structure for each component’s frequency band, the sound maintains the same timbre and characteristic across the entire audible and inaudible frequency range. Each speaker component is designed to cover a wider range of playback spectrum giving the tuner a wider range of adjustability. The HDZ-9000 speakers also feature proprietary Alpine technologies, that include DDDrive, DDLinear, and Dual Emission, which work together to maximize accuracy and reduce distortion between speakers.

The HDZ-9000 4-Way Speakers feature an HDZ-9000SW 11” Subwoofer, pairs of HDZ-9000WF 6.5” Midbass Speakers, HDZ-9000MID 2.5” Midrange Speakers, and HDZ-9000TW 1” Tweeters for a true stereo image.

A Complete Audio System

Each component of the AlpineF#1Status system was designed to ensure that the system play at its intended Hi-Res spec. To reach this level of performance, the system’s signal path uses custom connectivity, including XLR cables and A2B, because of their ability to accurately support the Hi-Res spec. This makes the AlpineF#1Status system an all-inclusive, complete system designed in perfect synchronization.

While AlpineF#1Status was designed as a complete system, there is flexibility to add or retain a head unit other than the included HDS-7909. The HDP-H900 DSP includes a traditional RCA input, and up to six channels of high-level input, that can be used to retain the vehicle’s factory head unit or add an aftermarket head unit, which is valuable for the audio enthusiast who relies on smartphone connectivity and features, like Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, or Bluetooth®.

Whether retaining the factory head unit, upgrading to an aftermarket head unit, or using the AlpineF#1Status HDS-7909 Head Unit, the result is still a cohesive system that works in perfect synchronization to reproduce the highest level of performance available in the challenging vehicle interior environment.

AlpineF#1Status is exclusively available as a complete sound system at a M.A.P. of $35,000. An additional HDZ-9000SW 11” Subwoofer is available if more bass is desired at a M.A.P. of $2,600 (sold separately). AlpineF#1Status is available for purchase at AlpineF#1Status Authorized Retailers. A list of retailers can be found on www.alpine-usa.om/alpineflagship/wheretobuy.
