1-17-2017, Mobile Electronics -- Being a 12-volt business is interesting and challenging. Being a 12-volt business that is family-owned and operated takes it to another level, especially considering that less than one third of family businesses survive the transition from first to second generation.

Scosche, which was founded by Roger and Scotia Alves, is going on its 37th year of business with the next generation, brothers Kas Alves and Vince Alves, serving as executive vice presidents.

Back in 1980, the company operated out of a residential garage in Southern California with its roots in research and consulting. When the focus turned to car audio, the first clients included heavy-hitters Alpine and Kenwood.

Seeing major potential in the automotive audio aftermarket, Scosche developed their first dash kit and launched what has become a signature product category for the company. In fact, the first of the company’s 100-plus patents in 1994 was for a GM vehicle dash kit.

From its humble start to a sprawling campus in Oxnard, Calif., the company now has two distribution centers. One is located on the main campus while the second one, which boasts 14 docks and 30-foot side wall construction, is based in Spruce Pine, Ala. It allows Scosche to reach 37 states within 48 hours using standard ground services. The company has an international presence with an office in Hong Kong and as its products are sold in more than 50 countries.

Not only has Scosche grown out of its garage, but it has significantly expanded its range of offerings to more than 4,000 SKUs. In addition to dash kits and wire harnesses, its products include antennas, amps, speakers, subs, speaker enclosures, Bluetooth accessories, power and audio cables, iPhone accessories, and much more.

Business In A Dash

“If you go back 20 years ago with the company, there were dash kits and wire harnesses, and that was the extent of the 12-volt line,” said Nate Perkins, 12 Volt Team Manager, now on his second stint with Scosche. He was previously with the company from 1997 and 2010. 

 “Today it is much more technologically driven as far as integration and with being able to add on to your OEM system with different auxiliary inputs, adding an aftermarket radio to your factory amplifier, or your factory warning system," added Perkins. "Integration has really come to the forefront.”

The impact has been far reaching for the consumer.

“Consumers are intimidated,” Perkins said. “They look at their OEM car stereo and wish it did a couple more things. But some of the guys who have these vehicles are guys that started out 20 years in the industry when it was easy to make changes. Now they look at it and it’s a whole other animal. The dashboard is more integrated with the entire system of the vehicle—the radio, the AC controls, the warning chimes, and the warning systems. There is really a huge intimidation factor. So one of the biggest hurdles right now is educating the consumer that they can change out their OEM stereo, they can integrate with it, and they can add to their experience.”

Not to mention the challenge it creates for dealers.

 “One of the biggest hurdles on the dealers’ end is embracing the amount of inventory they’ve got to have,” said Shane Condon, 12 Volt Product Development Manager. “It used to be that they could stock a few items and be pretty confident that it would cover anything that came into their install bay. That’s just not the case anymore. More and more dealers are stocking the basic items, but then they use the just-in-time inventory system for everything else.”

Oxnard, Calif. – (June 8, 2017) – SCOSCHE Industries has announced the availability of the new HeadsUp™ OBDII Add-on LED Display. Designed to enable drivers to easily see their vehicle’s speed, temperature and more – displayed directly onto their windshield – this is the latest addition to Scosche’s recently introduced new line of SAFETECH™ products, products designed to promote a smarter, safer driving experience. 

“We all know that taking your eyes off the road – even a couple of seconds – can have serious consequences,” said Chris Cowles, Director of Marketing at Scosche. “The HeadsUp™ OBDII Add-on LED Display is a small convenient display product for safer diving. Oxnard, Calif. – (July 18, 2017) – SCOSCHE Industries has announced the availability of the first in its upcoming lineup of second-generation Integrated Touchscreen Control Installation Kits, the 2010 - 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ITC 2.0 Installation Kit – Part Number ITCGM01B.

This plug-and-play ITC 2.0 dash kit allows easy replacement of the vehicle's factory stereo to any aftermarket DIN or Double DIN unit. This dash kit is the first of its kind to include a dual, full-color touch screen system to control the vehicle’s air conditioning, as well as other vehicle technology systems and convenience features. The kit requires no complex programming or cutting of any of the OEM wiring in the vehicle during installation.

The ITCGM01B is configurable for single and dual climate controls. The new and improved ITC 2.0 interface features dual, full-color touch screens to provide comprehensive vehicle systems and audio integration. This dash kit has been designed with high-quality automotive grade ABS plastic to match the texture and paint of the vehicle manufacturer’s fascia panels.

Scosche is celebrating 40 years in business, 40 years of innovation, and 40 years of exceptional people working together to design, develop and deliver cutting-edge products!

Family owned and operated since 1980, Roger and his wife Scotia Alves started Scosche Industries in their Ventura County garage. The company is still headquartered in Ventura County, California, but has grown to over 200 employees and has achieved many significant milestones and successes over those four decades.

In 1980, as automotive audio consultants, Roger and Scotia Alves published the Autosound Encyclopedia, which is still considered the “Bible” of the car audio industry. By 1984, they had earned their first patent for their General Motors multi-purpose dash kit, revolutionizing the DIY car audio business for retail. EFX, Scosche’s high-end line of car audio accessories was introduced in 1990.

Roger and Scotia’s sons Kas and Vince joined Scosche in 1995 and 2000, respectively, and are now Co-Presidents. Kas’ son Ryder joined the family business in 2018 as Marketing Assistant and Video Editor.

In 1996 the Alves created the SoundKase ™ brand which was the kick-off for a highly successful line, which included: a 12 DVD/CD Visor Organizer, storage cases, seat back organizers, CamKase camera bags, and SoundSak audio backpacks. All SoundKase products utilized a unique and patented non-scratch CD pocket system. This development moved Scosche squarely into the Consumer Technology (CT) Accessories arena, an exciting and successful new direction for the company. By 2005, now firmly established in the world of CT accessories, Scosche introduced BlueLife ® – the first to after-market streaming audio and hands-free Bluetooth ® car/headphone/home kits.

In addition to completing several vehicle builds with us, including our 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon , they test, use, and create content for Scosche products including: smartphone mounts, powersports mounts and mirrors, chargers and cables, vehicle jump starters, backup batteries, power inverters and more.This product testing is carried out by Nic, the RPG Team and their ambassadors in their vehicle builds, everywhere from daily drives to extreme off road environments such as trail runs, and races, like King of the Hammers.

On February 12, 2020, MotorTrend magazine announced that Rockstar Performance Garage’s owner Nic Ashby has been named Builder of the Year by MotorTrend’s American SuperJeep Challenge. As part of the inaugural competition, the American SuperJeep Challenge invited the top custom modified Jeep Builders in the country to compete for the title of SuperJeep Champion Builder of the Year. Entries were required to pass pre-set modification requirements to qualify, and were judged by an elite panel of diversified industry leaders, including Courtney Hansen, Terry Madden and Greg Henderson.

“We scoured the country looking for some of the most exciting and unique rigs and builders in America. Our goal is to highlight the incredible skill that exists among today’s builders who have mastered working with a uniquely American platform – The Jeep Wrangler,” said Tony May, Executive Producer, American SuperJeep Challenge. “We could not be happier with the competitors for our first series, and while all of the participants deserve recognition for their many contributions to the off-road community, GRDLOC’s marriage of form, function and creativity ultimately earned Nic Ashby and Rockstar Performance Garage the top spot.”

The winning builders and their one-of-a-kind builds were ultimately measured by the highest standards, based on custom modifications, fabrications and its craftsmanship as well as creativity, presentation, overall functionality – and put to the test during a series of challenges at the 2020 King of the Hammers in Johnson Valley, California.

“GRDLOC is my personal build and a passion project that has involved nearly every member of the team at RPG, I’m proud to share this recognition with my team and honored that we had the opportunity to compare our work head-to-head with the work of colleagues and fellow shop owners who we all hold in such high regard,” said Nic Ashby, Proprietor of LDRSHIPdesigns and Rockstar Performance Garage. “I’m thankful to American SuperJeep and MotorTrend for creating this platform and I look forward to following along as the series grows and more builders have the opportunity to showcase their passion.”

Rockstar Performance Garage is a collaboration between Rockstar Energy Drink and LDRSHIP designs to build the first Lifestyle Garage.
