11-27-2017 -- Lyft has secured a permit to test its self-driving cars on public roads in California, according to California Department of Motor Vehicles records.
It joins other companies like Uber and Google's sibling company Waymo, which also have permits to test their cars on public roads.
The ridehailing firm announced it plans to develop its own autonomous vehicle technology earlier this year. It has also announced various other self-driving car partnerships with Google and General Motors, which has invested $500 million in the startup.
The permit suggests that it’s making progress on its goals and catching up with other firms. Uber has already been testing its vehicles on public roads, and earlier this year Waymo became the first company to test its cars on public roads without human assistance. Tesla is also testing its own autonomous vehicle technology.
