A Grassroots Goliath

Tucked inside its massive parent company, Sony Car Audio covers the country with trainings, support, sales and more to keep its dealer base satisfied and strong.

Words by Jamie Sorcher

The name speaks volumes. The Sony brand in the consumer electronics industry, and around the world, has always carried weight—and still does today. The Japanese company was founded in 1946 with only 20 employees and launched iconic products like the Walkman in 1979 and the world’s first compact CD player in 1982. While currently best known for its PlayStation and digital cameras, the mammoth company is regarded as a design trendsetter and desirable brand whether for TVs, computers or car stereos.

Nestled within this large conglomerate, which has its U.S. headquarters in San Diego, Calif., is a gem of grassroots operation. Sony Car Audio operates its tight-knit support team under the guidance of Distribution Sales Manager Anthony Tozzi who works remotely from New Jersey.

“We are a really unconventional business,” he said. “While Sony is this large company, car audio is just a small part of their business. One of the things we constantly say is ... Read the rest of the story HERE.

1-11-2017 -- Sony has redefined its territorial boundaries and added several new 12 Volt focused distribution partners to more effectively cover the United States, better serve its retailers with timely product delivery, more training, and expertise in the field.

“Adding these business partners on the distribution channel helps our independent retailer channel by providing them the best option for purchasing our product across the entire country, while helping us protect our online representation, pricing, and margins.” said Rick Kojan, National Sales Manager for Sony Car Audio.

New Sony Distribution Partners & Territories

  • MRI Premium Distribution Services (New York state, New England)
  • Murfco (Southern California, Arizona, Southern Nevada, Hawaii)
  • AM Merchandising (Northern California, Northern Nevada)
  • Mid-State Distributing & CPS Distributors Inc. (shared territory in Iowa, Nebraska)

Training events are being scheduled with all distributors, and there will be an intense focus on re-educating retailers across the country on Sony technologies and the product line, as well as techniques to sell the products and features effectively. In addition, the Sony 12-volt Tech Line is dedicated to helping retailers who need assistance on sales or installation tips, and can be reached at 855-SONY-12V (855-766-9128).

April 18, 2019 -- Sony has added two new 12 Volt distribution partners that will be able to better serve their specialty retailers in Alaska and Hawaii. Both states will benefit from a local representation and supply of the Sony product line, and Hawaii will be celebrating the return of Sony products at a local level.

“These new business partners in our distribution channel will help independent specialty retailers by providing them a more efficient method for purchasing our products while helping us serve these retailers in a more hands-on model,” said Anthony Tozzi, Distribution Sales Manager.

September 10, 2019 -- Sony has made several moves recently to improve territory coverage in the Northwest, Northeast and in Michigan. Davis Distribution, based in Newell, WV replaces Altron International as the distribution partner covering the state of Michigan. GoFast Solutions out of Middletown, CT replaces MRI Premium Distribution Services in the Northeast. And AM Merchandising expands North and replaces Custom Plus Distributors as the distributor in the greater Northwest. DAS Distributors takes over the entire state of New York to expand the northern portion of their territory. All four partners look to grow Sony sales and leverage their ability to serve retailers at a high level in their respective new territories.

“Growing Davis Distribution’s and DAS Distributors’ territories makes great sense for us because of the great service and support they provide their retailer partners. GoFast Solutions is a new business partner, but their team is familiar with us and how we go to market. Tom Miller’s team at AM Merchandising has proven to be a great partner in Northern California, so their growth into the Northwest was logical. Each will help serve our independent specialty retailers and grow our business in these markets,” said Anthony Tozzi, Distribution Sales Manager.

Davis Distribution will now serve the state of Michigan, in addition to their existing Sony territory in Indiana, Ohia, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Western Pennsylvania. Improved Sound Optimization – the digital signal processor enables drivers to make adjustments while creating a sound field ideal for the inside of the vehicle; the Dynamic Stage Organizer (DSO) creates a more ambient sound as if there were speakers on the dashboard, while the 10-band equalizer (EQ10) has 10 presets for easy and effective frequency adjustment for various listening environments

FLAC Audio File Compatiblev – Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC) is an audio format similar to MP3 but is lossless, meaning audio signals are compressed without any loss in quality; the XAV-AX7000 can play back FLAC files, allowing up to 24-bit depth sampling frequency at 96 kHz (down-converted to 48 kHz for playback)

6.95-inch Bezel-less Flush Surface Display – anti-glare capacitive touchscreen with an astonishingly flat, bezel-less and beautiful display that elegantly matches with your car interior

Sleek Aluminum Key Terminal with dedicated Voice Button and Sealed Structure – the ergonomically designed key terminal gives instant access to source selections and sound adjustments while minimizing distractions when you are behind the wheel

3-pre out for future expandability – the 3-pre out connectivity allows you to build a full acoustic system including a subwoofer, a mono amplifier and 4-channel amplifier for even louder and more powerful sound reproduction

Rear View Camera Ready with Adjustable Parking Guide Lines – you can see the image of a connected rear view camera*[vii] when you shift the vehicle's transmission lever to the R (Reverse) position or tap the Rear Camera icon in the home screen
