The first day of KnowledgeFest Dallas saw packed classrooms, where attendees learned about improving their businesses, selling accessories, stereo and more. Bryan Schmitt of Mobile Solutions presented on 12-volt industry trends, along with ideas on how to keep a business moving forward.  "Saying you're an expert is one thing," Schmitt noted during his lecture. "Being an expert takes clear direction and dedication to that goal."

The biggest takeaway from today's sessions were the numbers: Training sessions were very well-attended, with people waiting outside the door in some cases, trying to look inside. Knowledge-seeking continued into the evening with "Night School" sessions, including Part 2 of JL Audio's School of Sound; Mastering Instagram; and a store owners' roundtable discussion led by Chris Cook of MEA.

My personal favorites included the first part of JL Audio's presentations on sound, and Vince De Stefano's lecture on "The Fine Art of Selling Accessories." Look for a feature article by the same name in the September issue of Mobile Electronics magazine, in case you missed the class or would like a refresher!

See you on the show floor.

Premium Sound Deadening Brand Debuts at KnowledgeFest Dallas

DALLAS, TEXAS -- July 22, 2019 -- 12-volt industry icons John Schwartz and Bryan Schmitt partner to launch a premium brand of sound deadening products called SoundShield. The flagship product is a 4.5mm thick, triple-layer damping sheet with a flexible butyl rubber, high-tac adhesive base, a heat-rejecting foil center and a high-tech, waterproof closed-cell foam top layer. The sheets easily install on vehicle sheet metal and panels prone to vibration and transfer of road noise. SoundShield products are intended for 12 volt installation specialists and interior fabricators to aid in premium, finished-quality results of an automotive interior and sound system. The products debut at the MEA KnowledgeFest in Dallas, TX on August 9th.

Both company founders come from other well-established, self-made companies. Schwartz is the CEO of 2010 & 2015 ME-Mag Retailer of the Year, Perfectionist Auto Sound & Security in Anchorage, AK. Schmitt is the President of ME-Mag 2017 Accessory Vendor of the Year and three-time category finalist, Mobile Solutions USA. Both are regular presenters at industry trade events and mentors to many retail shop owners. The two have collaborated on business ideas and forward-looking industry initiatives over the years and the partnership with SoundShield is a natural evolution of their relationship.

“I’m so excited to partner with Bryan on SoundShield. He is one of the most respected people I know. I met Bryan in 2009 at a trade show and I knew we would be great friends," Schwartz said. "I think the Perfectionist Auto Sound & Security name I’ve worked hard to elevate completely matches the values of the Mobile Solutions brand. We both espouse integrity and high quality in the work we do, as well as that represented by independent specialists around the country. We want 12-volt technicians and interior fabricators to love SoundShield as much as we do.” Among the technical accolades, Schwartz noted the retail-to-consumer margins with SoundShield are also fantastic.

Since January 2019 the pair have been developing the SoundShield brand to serve the independent 12-volt specialist by researching and sourcing the highest quality automotive sound damping and absorption products in the industry. They’ve not only considered the technical aspects and installation-friendly design, but created stunning retail packaging and thoughtful profit margins to bring added labor dollars into the business of its dealers. “We are very much dedicated to highlighting the value of specialty installation and SoundShield products simply add to that effort," Schmitt said. "John Schwartz is an amazing marketing mind and an all-around business inspiration with all he’s accomplished, so I could not be more pleased to partner with him in SoundShield. We believe we have something very special to bring to market.” The company says retailers selling upscale interiors and high-end audio upgrades are the ideal audience for SoundShield partnerships.

SoundShield will debut its flagship damping sheet technology at MEA KnowledgeFest in Dallas, Texas, August 9-11, 2019. They will be co-located with the Mobile Solutions booth #523. SoundShield products will be distributed out of their Dallas, Texas warehouse which has its own dedicated staff. Shipping times are within one to three days anywhere in the continental US. The company is also seeking international distributors.

Founded in 2019, partners John Schwartz and Bryan Schmitt saw an opportunity to elevate the level of installation quality behind the panels of a vehicle interior so that every technician’s visual and audible installation efforts were highlighted without the drawbacks of rattles, buzzes and road noise. Headquartered in Anchorage, AK and with its central distribution facility in Dallas, Texas, SoundShield is dedicated to 12 volt retailers and interior fabrication specialists with the highest quality and most effective automotive sound deadening products available today.

NORTH ANDOVER January 3, 2017 — Mobile Electronics® announced that after its record setting KnowledgeFest attendance in Dallas, it has secured larger exhibit halls for both its 2017 KnowledgeFest events. It’s moving the KnowledgeFest Dallas show and educational conference to the Dallas Convention Center. Dates for the 2017 Dallas event are August 12-14.

“KnowledgeFest Dallas is growing with more exhibitors, programming and attendees,” said Kerry Moyer, vice president strategic partnerships, Mobile Electronics. “2016 was a record-breaking event. We had to redraw the exhibit floor four times to accommodate the number of new exhibitors. With growing booth sizes, to meet our and our exhibitors’ needs, we decided it was time to move from the hotel-based venue to the larger show floor provided by the Dallas Convention Center.”

Also, for 2017, Mobile Electronics is moving its Indianapolis-based KnowledgeFest (April 10-12) to a larger hall in the Indiana Convention Center. “We started small, and now in our third year, we want the flexibility to meet expected growth,” said Moyer. KnowledgeFest “Spring Training” is the kickoff event for the new products being introduced now. Manufacturers can train and educate dealers on features, benefits and installation techniques of their new products.

KnowledgeFest shows and educational conferences are the electronics industry’s only events specifically targeted to the 12-volt mobile specialist, the installing dealer. KnowledgeFest three-day events combine an exhibit floor featuring the top brands in mobile electronics with educational workshops and manufacturer training sessions; making them the mobile electronics industry’s largest educational events.

Holly Hill, FL – July 17, 2019 – Metra Electronics® is excited to be hosting six training sessions at the 2019 KnowledgeFest™ event in Dallas, Texas, for mobile electronics installers. As a Diamond Ultra sponsor, Metra is proud to support the industry by providing in-depth training sessions for installers which will outline upgraded vehicle safety systems, selling and installing lighting solutions, simplified installs with sound processors and the future of vehicle integration. Metra will also have product giveaways at each session for attendees. Installer Institute® will also be at the show, promoting their mobile electronics training programs and continuing education courses for existing installation professionals.

Both of the iBEAM training sessions, “Upgrading Vehicle Safety Systems with iBEAM,” will assist installers in identifying the essential selling points of safety and convenience, and will be held on Saturday, August 10th at 4:45 pm and Sunday, August 11th at 3:30 pm. Installing aftermarket cameras and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems in both consumer and commercial vehicles has become a significant revenue source for mobile electronics shops. Attendees will learn about iBEAM’s latest vehicle cameras, dashboard cameras with DVRs, replacement rearview mirrors, vehicle-specific solutions and commercial safety line. They’ll also learn about the hot-button selling points and features that consumers and fleet owners are asking for, plus installation tips for a better understanding of what is involved in an upgrade. Attendees will also have the chance to win product giveaways from iBEAM.

Heise will also be hosting two training sessions, “Selling and Installing Heise LED Lighting Solutions,” on Friday, August 9th at 1:45 pm and Sunday, August 11th at 4:45 pm. The recent popularity in aftermarket LED lighting presents a valuable opportunity for installers to go beyond car audio services, giving consumers a way to customize their ride and increase visibility in the dark. However, not all LED lights on the market are the same. This session will allow installers to learn about Heise’s unique features and selling points that have set this brand apart from the rest. This training will cover the new DRL lightbars, replacement LED headlights, RGB backlit lightbars, RGB accent lights and the new Municipality Series of safety lights for commercial equipment and fleet vehicles. Attendees will also have the chance to win product giveaways from Heise.

Axxess will be hosting two different training sessions. The first session, “Simplify your Installs with Axxess Digital Sound Processors,” will cover the entire Axxess AX-DSP product line and how these solutions can increase sales in the showroom and decrease time in the bay. The session will be hosted on Friday, August 9th at 3:00 pm. This session will show installers that upgrading a sound system doesn’t have to be complicated. This training will also go over and explain how to use the different types of applications offered within the AX-DSP line, including CAN-based systems, new A2B systems, MOST25, and MOST50 vehicle technology. As vehicle technology becomes more and more complex, installers can look for Metra’s patented DSP products to help simplify installation and provide affordable audio solutions for their customers.

The second Axxess training session on Saturday, August 10th at 6:00 pm, “The Future of Vehicles Integration with New Axxess Products,” explains that integration is the future of the aftermarket 12 volt industry - and it’s only getting more complex. With the reduction in OE radio chassis sizes, the rising popularity of tablet-style screens, and many of the personalization features controlled through the OE radio, it is difficult for shops to offer simple aftermarket solutions. Attendees will learn about new products from Axxess that have been engineered specifically to address the complexity of today’s integrated vehicle technology systems and retain key convenience and safety features when upgrading a radio. For consumers who want to keep their radio but add safety, navigation, smart device mirroring, or simply override the annoying STOP/START engine feature, installers can learn about these new products from Axxess that will make their customer’s ride much more enjoyable. Attendees will have the chance to win product giveaways from Axxess.

Metra’s customers can register for KnowledgeFest at no cost using Metra’s VIP code, available by request from their sales representative. Once registered for the event, attendees will also need to register online at KnowledgeFest.org for each training session they will attend. Metra will be at booth #601 from August 9-11, 2019 at the Dallas Convention Center. Additional information about the show, produced by the Mobile Electronics Association (MEA), is available at KnowledgeFest.org
