Long Beach, Calif., July 19th, 2021 KENWOOD USA is honored to recognize the retirement of Rick Snelson, (now previous) owner of the Car-Fi Mobile Electronics retail stores in Springfield and Nixa, Missouri.
Recently we had the opportunity to speak with Rick Snelson (now former owner of Car-Fi, MO). Snelson recently announced he was retiring and selling his Car-Fi retail stores. As a loyal supporter of KENWOOD for over 4 decades, we wanted to learn the tips and tricks he used to succeed in the world of 12-volt retail.
“It all started with the inspiration of my entrepreneurial father who chose to open up a TV and Appliance store when I was 15 years old. At that time, I was going to school for half of the day, and working the other half, learning the nuts and bolts of customer service,” said Snelson. Seven years later, he accelerated into his own ventures of ownership and sales management, of which soon-after he was introduced to KENWOOD, selling it for the first time at a store called Stereo Buff in Springfield, MO. His keen business sense and talent was quickly sought after, and by 1981 was recruited by World Radio in Council Bluffs, IA as their buyer. He worked with them to build their storefronts from 3 to 20 in a matter of years, where KENWOOD was their lead brand.
So, where does one go from here you may ask? Snelson had an appetite for bringing happiness and excitement to customers through his love of cars, music, and the experience achieved from that combination. It was this notion that led Snelson to open up Car-Fi in Springfield, MO in 1986 as the FIRST Car Audio only store in Springfield, MO.
The city of Springfield could feel his love for the music, as they helped him propel the business to a staff of over 14, with a 2 million dollar a year revenue by the store’s second year in business...and that was just the beginning! “At that time, we were selling cassette players, both shaft and pullout style…primarily KENWOOD (remember they created the first aftermarket removable anti-theft radio?).” We also capitalized on our local limousine business, of which an alignment with a strategic partner in the wholesale industry (George Hillman) yielded substantial results.
By the late 90’s, Car-Fi grew to 5 million dollars a year in annual sales in a city of just 150,000 people. “Capturing this sort of revenue required significant promoting,” said Snelson. “In order to earn and grow your business, you must not only provide exceptional customer service, but you also have to make it fun. Sometimes I feel like I took that a bit too far… but it worked!”
Snelson was known for some outrageous sales promotions, such as the Jello Jump. No, that’s not a typo…Snelson would literally put 100 marbles in a physical pool filled with Jello. The marbles had numbers on them that correlated to a specific prize (everything from t-shirts to radios). 3,000+ people would attend the events. You couldn’t drive onto or even close to the parking lot filled with customers. Other events included car giveaways, sound-offs, and even manager on the roof sales, where he or a manager would get on the roof and live up there for days. “We couldn’t come down until we hit our sales goals,” said Snelson. “We literally had a port-a-potty on it. Radio DJ’s would be there giving things away all day, making it a fun event for all who attended.”
When we asked Snelson about what type of sales promotions he would recommend, he stated that of all the promotions they held, his tent or warehouse sales have always been the most beneficial. “I don’t think there’s anything better than a tent/warehouse sale,” said Snelson. “We would bring in $150,000 in sales on a 3-day weekend event. I would highly recommend this type of event to any 12-volt retail store location. You need to make it a selling event.”
Throughout Snelson’s career, he was pivotal in many industry organizations. When In Car Experts (ICE) debuted as a 12-volt buying/marketing group, he was one of its very first members, helping to put it together with David Schwartz. Shortly after, he became one of the first 5 board members of the Mobile Electronics Specialists of America (MESA), a 12-volt buying/marketing group led by its Executive Director Ryan Gunter.
Snelson has also been no stranger to charity work and giving back to his community, even giving away one of his vans filled with gear to a charity that will carry on this legacy. He’s supported a teen homeless outreach program for many years, helping them to get clothing and supplies for school. He even put a rack out in front of his store with a sign reading: “Need a coat, take one. Want to help? Leave one.” “I have known Snelson for over 30 years,” said Brett Phelps of Progressive Sales and Marketing, who represents the KENWOOD line for Snelson’s “former” territory. “He has a huge heart and would walk through glass for people he barely knew when they genuinely needed his help. It’s been an honor to have worked with and been a friend of Snelson for all these years.”
“What’s driven me year after year is that I’ve never lost sight that the music matters,” said Snelson. “From the way we present the product from the time a customer walks in the door, to the final in-car demonstration, the way the music sounds and that smile on your customer’s face is what truly matters and makes it all worthwhile.”

Motorcycle and motorsports enthusiasts now have a stealth solution to simultaneously record in both the front and rear of their vehicle in FULL HD 1920 x 1080 resolution. The STZ-RF200WD consists of 2 externally-mounted cameras, a control switch, and a GPS antenna, all carrying an IP66/67 rating, meaning that they can resist high-pressure, heavy sprays of water and are fully sealed against dust entry. The “brain” of the system is an IP55 rated hide-a-way control box, meaning that it is protected against dust ingress and low-pressure water jets. The control box would typically mount underneath a seat or in another covered location in most motorcycles, side-by-sides/UTV’s, ATV’s and more. When additional length beyond each camera’s 6.6 ft. cable is needed, optional camera extension cables in lengths of 3.3 ft. (STZ-RFCC100, MAP $34.95), 9 ft. (STZ-RFCC300, MAP $49.95), and 16 ft. The number of models embedded with Apple CarPlay™ has increased from four to eight, encompassing the four new topline models across KENWOOD and KENWOOD eXcelon. When a compatible iPhone® is connected to the receiver via USB, the Apple CarPlay interface lets the user access select entertainment and information smartphone apps on the receiver’s display, as well as use Siri® to make selections, provide navigation directions and deliver search results by voice.
As well, the number of units equipped with Android Auto™ has doubled to four models in 2016. Created to extend the Android experience into the vehicle environment, Android Auto provides useful information at the right time, in addition to turn-by-turn navigation, music selection and more. A combination of voice and simplified touch menus lets the driver access Android Auto’s features with minimal distraction. Phones connected through the USB port now benefit from new rapid-charging technology that delivers up to 1.5 amps.
Sound quality was enhanced in the 2016 line. Available on select KENWOOD eXcelon receivers, High-Resolution Audio Playback decodes up to 192KHz, 24-bit FLAC- or WAV-embedded files from media connected through the USB port, which now supports more types of storage media. For all 2016 receivers, a built-in 13-band equalizer enables precise audio adjustments. To further tailor audio to the vehicle environment, the user can access new features to adjust digital time alignment, sound stage height, ambiance and volume based on ambient road noise, powering the built-in amplifier or external amplifiers through three sets of RCA outputs.
Previously featured only on key models, all 2016 receivers now support the ability to have two phones actively connected via Bluetooth at the same time, letting the driver and passenger select which phone will be broadcast through the audio system. All models also receive the latest Hands-Free profile, supporting high-quality calls at twice the bandwidth of the previous profile.
In addition to audio and the user interface, all 2016 multimedia units can now better interface with the larger vehicle world. Each supports connection of two cameras (front and rear view) to help avoid obstacles while parking and maneuvering. Most new units also support connection with iDataLink® Maestro, an add-on vehicle gateway device that enables the receiver to read vehicle information, control specific factory features and connect to factory installed entertainment and safety peripherals.

LONG BEACH, CALIF., August 7, 2018 (MEDIAWIRE)– KENWOOD USA announced that ESCORT’s two installed radar detection platforms—ESCORT iX Ci and ESCORT MAX Ci—can now work with the latest KENWOOD and KENWOOD eXcelon digital multimedia receivers. The integration, which is achieved via connection to the new iDatalink Maestro RR2 interface by Automotive Data Solutions (ADS), enables drivers to get alerts and adjust settings of the detection system. The Maestro RR2 will ship at the end of August and will be available through authorized KENWOOD retailers.
With the new integration, drivers see ESCORT radar detector information on the KENWOOD multimedia screen, including vehicle speed and the current location’s speed limit. Alerts play through the vehicle’s front speaker, announcing the specific radar or laser band, current vehicle speed and direction (if rear radar is installed). The driver can use the touch screen to turn off the laser shifter (if equipped) and mark red-light cameras, speed traps and police locations.
Designed to be seamlessly integrated into the vehicle, the ESCORT iX Ci and ESCORT MAX Ci feature intelligent and advanced detection range, respectively, and provide front radar protection against all radar speed monitoring devices. Both platforms include the ability to add on rear radar as well as up to four laser shifters to accommodate any radar and laser detection application.
The new iDatalink Maestro RR2 covers more applications than its predecessor with the enhanced ability to connect to multi-network systems in newer vehicles. An additional serial port and audio input enable connectivity with the ESCORT radar detector platforms. The system also features wireless configuration via an upcoming smartphone app that will make installation and programming easier.

KENWOOD USA announced it is set to ship two new smartphone-compatible multimedia receivers this month. The Excelon DDX6902S (MSRP $850.00) and DDX6702S (MSRP $800.00) expand the family of units equipped with Apple® CarPlay®, the Apple-produced in-vehicle interface for iPhone®.
While the pair’s predecessors—the Excelon DDX9902S and DDX9702S—are equipped with both Android™ Auto (a smartphone interface made by Google to work with late-model Android-powered smartphones) and Apple CarPlay, the two new units focus solely on the iPhone. Siri®, Apple’s voice-activated and voice-responsive intelligent assistant, is the user’s primary interface to select entertainment options, open apps, reply to text messages and get turn-by-turn directions.

Onboard entertainment options include a full suite of content including digital channels via HD Radio®, CD and DVD, and terrestrial AM and FM. Both units are also SiriusXM-Ready™ and can connect to the optional SXV300 tuner (sold separately) to access hundreds of audio channels (subscription required). With a connected smartphone, the entertainment options increase with built-in control of Pandora® Internet Radio and iHeartRadio®.
Built-in amplifiers enable each unit to power directly connected speakers, making them ideal drop-in replacements for factory radios. The KENWOOD DMX9708S and eXcelon DMX908S both feature a 6.95” capacitive touch panel display with wireless and wired support for Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, wireless Android® screen mirroring, HD Radio®, Advanced iDatalink® Maestro RR support (with newly designed GUI’s), SiriusXM® ready compatibility, 4 camera inputs including the ability to connect the DRV-N520 integrated dashboard camera, and support for Hi-Res Audio. LONG BEACH, CALIF. -- January 10th, 2020 -- Making its debut at CES, KENWOOD USA is introducing a fourth new product in their series of next-generation dash cams. With an MSRP of $269.95 the DRV-A700WDP is a GPS integrated compact dual dash cam system that features screenless designed front and rear recording cameras, which are less obtrusive than typical dash cams with a screen. This Wide Quad HD (2560 x 1440) front dash cam and Full HD (1920 x 1080) rear dash cam system provides superior picture quality, wireless link smartphone app compatibility, and a new quick release magnetic mount.
The DRV-A700WDP, which is scheduled to begin shipping later this month, creates an opportunity for KENWOOD dealers that has never existed before. Now, dealers can offer users a maintenance free system that stays out of sight and out of mind, but with the convenience of easy access whenever they choose via their smartphone, which connects wirelessly to the system. Once connected, users can play back and edit videos, download videos to their smartphone, upload videos directly to social media, access GPS information while viewing on Google maps, and control all the settings of the system.
Its picture recording quality is impressive, with the front camera capable of recording in Wide Quad HD, which covers 3.7 million pixels, as well as High Dynamic Range (HDR), which allows it to easily record clear images in dark or well-lit environments without underexposing or overexposing the image. The front camera has a lens rotation of -90° to 40° and includes a high-quality 3M tape style mounting system with spare 3M pads. The rear camera, which includes a 26’ cable to connect to the front camera, records in Full HD of 2 million pixels, and is also the recording resolution when both cameras are recording simultaneously. Both cameras record at 30 frames per second and include a 1/2.8 CMOS sensor.

Kenwood USA has announced its newest top-end multimedia receiver, the eXcelon DNX893S, in its booth at International CES, January 6-9.
The double-DIN, touch friendly unit is the company’s most complete entertainment and information center to date, receiving a completely new processing infrastructure, enhanced smartphone integration, improved safety features and support for high-resolution audio.
“We’ve redesigned this unit inside and out,” said Rick Noetzli, KENWOOD product manager. “It now features a Linux-based operating system and dual-core processor for improved stability and speed. The extra processing power supports the most extensive selection of inputs, applications and features we’ve ever put together.”
The DNX benefits from the company’s expansion of Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ into more of its 2016 multimedia receivers. Like the DDX9902S introduced in 2015, the DNX893S features both platforms, allowing users to connect either an iPhone® or Android™-based smartphone to safely access and control navigation, streaming content, messaging and music using an intuitive voice interface. Two USB ports with built-in support for rapid-charging technology let the user connect and charge a smartphone and use the other port for flash media.
When not using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, built-in apps on the DNX893S let the user select and control smartphone apps over Bluetooth on the receiver’s display, including Spotify® and Pandora® Internet Radio. Another integration feature is MHL support over HDMI, which displays the screen of a compatible Android-based smartphone on the receiver and lets the user control apps from the larger, safer display. The DNX893S is also SiriusXM-Ready™ and connects to the latest SiriusXM SXV300 Connect Vehicle Tuner (sold separately, subscription required).
The multimedia receiver’s user interface has been totally redesigned to provide an informative, logical array of information that minimizes distraction. Behind the brilliant 7-inch glass capacitive touch screen, large icons are amply spaced along the bottom of the display to enable a driver focusing on the road to easily find the desired function or entertainment source. The screen also displays vibrant album art next to a customizable widget area that lets the user store frequently used applications and select each with a swipe across the screen. For more tactile functions, the single row of buttons provides quick access to audio adjustments, source selection and menu options.
The safety elements of the DNX893S have been expanded to help the driver maneuver and find destinations more intuitively. In addition to the available rear camera view, a front-view camera can be added to get in and out of tight spaces or avoid parking blocks and other obstacles. A user-selectable overlay of park lines helps judge the distance between the vehicle and an another object. The DNX893S also includes onboard navigation from Garmin that provides turn-by-turn spoken directions, lane assistance a one-button selection of personalized destinations. On-screen traffic information provided by INRIX (free for two years) helps the driver plan routes more effectively by avoiding areas with heavy traffic congestion.
Last year, KENWOOD introduced higher-quality call audio via Bluetooth thanks to an enhanced Hands-Free profile. Bluetooth is improved again this year with the ability to have two phones actively paired at the same time. This driver and passenger use the receiver to select which phone call or phone-based entertainment media will be broadcast through the audio system, eliminating distractions associated with adjusting Bluetooth functions on each phone.
High-resolution audio media is supported on the DNX893S, with the ability to decode 192KHz, 24-bit FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) or WAV-embedded media from any source. The built-in, 13-band equalizer provides infinite adjustment for audio powering the built-in amplifier or sent through the three sets of 5-volt RCA outputs to outboard amplifiers. When a rider wants to review their FULL HD recorded footage, they can remove the included 32GB SD card and review it on a computer, or instantly link their smartphone to the system wirelessly, enabling them to also change the system’s settings.
