VISTA, Calif. (January 16, 2018) Directed is pleased to announce it has acquired Alcohol Detection Systems (ADS), a leading provider of breathalyzer-based ignition interlock devices (IIDs). ADS provides IIDs under its Determinator® product line, which Directed will maintain moving forward.
Evolving state regulations that require IID devices in DUI and DWI remediation programs have propelled the growth of the IID market. A growing body of evidence shows that IIDs have a positive effect on reducing the incidence of drunk driving.
“Ignition interlock devices really do save lives, and the growth of the IID market has been driven by the major benefit they provide to society,” said Directed CEO Bob Struble. “Directed and ADS share core technology, and we are confident that by bringing our leading product design, technical service, and distribution capabilities to the IID market, we will rapidly expand ADS’s business. IIDs are primarily installed by mobile electronics retailers and auto service shops, and we are excited to bring this new business opportunity to our longstanding partners.”
ADS Founder, Nick Cassiere commented, “We believe we have found an ideal partner in Directed. Directed’s national distribution and service footprint will allow us to expand quickly. I’m enthusiastic to push forward with the Directed team and bring the important benefits of our products to more drivers.”
ADS products are easy to install and use. During remediation programs, users have IIDs installed in their cars, and the devices ensure that the driver successfully passes a breathalyzer test before allowing the car to start. It is typical for IIDs to be recalibrated on a regular basis and then uninstalled upon program completion.

Improved Design Features High-Visibility LEDs for Enhanced Security and Long-Range Antenna for Added Range
VISTA, Calif. (November 19, 2018) – Directed announced today a new, improved control center for its industry-leading DS4 products. The new XDR Control Center features a long-range antenna, a pair of high-visibility blue LEDs, and a control button. It is now shipping with all new DS4 RF remote systems.
“The XDR Control Center continues Directed’s record of innovating, enhancing and expanding our DS4 ecosystem. XDR means Xtreme Digital Range: this antenna delivers twice the range of its predecessor and lightning quick confirmations when paired with 2-way remotes,” said Directed SVP of Product Management James Turner. “Our engineering team spent months optimizing the design to ensure groundbreaking performance. Some other long-range RF technologies are susceptible to interference in high humidity conditions like snow or rain. Not the XDR. We employed proprietary trace antenna design and robust power management circuitry to deliver maximum predictable range in any condition.”
The XDR Control Center features transverse mounted blue LEDs that are more visible inside and outside the vehicle. It works with both DS4 and DS4+ systems and is backward compatible with all Directed 900MHz LCD 2-way, LED 2-way 5-button, LED 2-way 1-button, 1-way 5-button, and 1-way 1-button remotes.
All DS4 RF remote start and security systems are now shipping with the new XDR Control Center. It will be available as a separate upgrade under part number 6867T in December.

New and Updated Sensors Make Installation Faster and More Profitable
VISTA, Calif. (January 08, 2019) – Directed today announced the addition of two new DS4 security sensors to its ecosystem of DS4 products. Since its founding, Directed has been at the forefront of automotive security, and these new security-specific sensors build on that legacy.
The 8604W is a multi-function sensor that connects to DS4 systems via Bluetooth, and provides multiple functionalities and uses. The 8604W is truly wireless and is battery powered with an estimated 5-year battery life. Like all accessories for the DS4, it is configurable via the Directlink Mobile app. The 8604W can be configured in three innovative ways – as an impact sensor, a tilt sensor, or as a hood or door trigger. It is configurable to perform just one of these functions or all three at the same time.
The 8508D dual-zone proximity sensor is an update to Directed’s 508D. The 8508D sensor connects to DS4 systems via D2D2.0 and provides adjustable inner and outer fields via the Directlink mobile app. It detects moving high-density objects using digital field-disturbance technology and provides warn-away and fulltrigger warnings to the DS4. The 8508D is ideal for convertibles or any vehicle where a customer may want to protect the interior contents from theft. It features a single D2D2.0 connection for communication and power, as well as a D2D2.0 pass-through port to add additional sensors.
“In 2019, we launched a number of security-only options for DS4. In 2020, we’re expanding our DS4 security options with the most cutting-edge sensors ever created in our industry,” according to James Turner, SVP & GM, Remote Start and Security at Directed. “The 8604W and the 8508D sensors add to the ever-growing DS4 ecosystem, providing faster, easier installation options for both technicians and consumers. Whether you’re protecting a convertible or a box truck, Directed has the best security options in the industry.”

Control Center Ensures a Great DS4 Experience Whether the Customer Purchases an RF Kit or Not
VISTA, Calif. (August 5, 2019) – Directed today announced it is now shipping a new D2D Control Center for DS4/DS4+ systems – the 8620D – which will enable faster and more efficient installation of DS4 and DS4+ systems when used without a Directed RF kit.
The 8620D is a plug and play control center that connects to the DS4/DS4+ via one of the D2D 2.0 ports on the module, and includes a programming button and features the same LED flashing style as the new XDR control center.
“With the 8620D, we are responding to feedback from our valued installer partners. Before its release, technicians were required to hardwire an LED and valet switch into the DS4 if they weren’t using one of our RF kits,” said James Turner, SVP Core Product Planning. “With the 8620D, it’s easier for install techs to use the Directlink mobile app for programming. Plus, vehicle owners will love the fact that they can easily add their system to the SmartStart mobile app for convenient Bluetooth® control.”
The 8620D replaces the current wired LED/Valet switch in existing DS4/DS4+ systems and will be available as a separate part number for existing systems.
“The 8620D simplifies the DS4/DS4+ install for expediters who are selling 3x Start and still need to access control menus and BLE pairing on the DS4 and the DS4+,” according to Turner. “Because the 8620D connects to the DS4/DS4+ via an included D2D RF cable, adding an RF kit will be even easier if the customer decides to upgrade later on.”

VISTA, Calif. (October 31, 2017) – Directed has announced improvements that enable lock and arm commands for their popular lines of 1-button remote controls for the new DS4 systems. Previously, 1-button remotes have been only capable of sending a remote start or unlock-while-remote-started command. Using its unique DS4 technology, Directed has developed 1-button remotes which can also send a lock or arm command. With this industry-first innovation, Directed’s 1-button remotes can for the first time be the main control method of a security system.
“One-button remote controls have been popular since their introduction and are appreciated by remote start customers who prefer not to part with their factory key fobs,” said Directed SVP Product Development & Technical Service James Turner. “But up until now, 1-buttons remotes did three things: start the vehicle, unlock the vehicle when running, and provide ‘carfinder’ when not running. We listened to the requests of our dealers and consumers, and using our recently launched DS4 Digital System, innovated to add lock and arm command capabilities.”
This feature is enabled on DS4 firmware and for the Viper 7816V 2-way and the Viper 7616V 1-way remotes. Technicians will know if a given firmware is compatible while flashing a DS4. The “unlock” icon is displayed next to the particular remote where compatible. While we expect this to be the preferred functionality, technicians will still have the option to flash the DS4 with the old command option.
A Winning Playbook for 12-Volt Partners to Sell Successfully In-Store and Online
VISTA, Calif. (October 25, 2019) – Directed announced today a new suite of sales policies to protect its valued 12 Volt dealer partners and enable them to compete effectively in today’s changing retail landscape.
“We listen very closely to feedback from our dealer partners, and they have consistently emphasized the importance of protecting our brands and channel, especially as consumer electronics internet sales become an expanding part of the business,” said Bob Struble, Directed CEO. “These comprehensive policies will safeguard brick and mortar retailers from unauthorized online sales and set clear guidelines for them to expand their online businesses. I’m thrilled about how these actions will protect and empower our retailers.”
The actions include a Unilateral Pricing Policy (UPP) and comprehensive Online Selling policies. “These policies will give us the ability to strongly control our products on the internet,” said Al Fontane, Vice President Sales. “Only our authorized dealers will be allowed to sell online. We can then systematically clean up sales that hurt our brand perception. If we find unauthorized products online, we’re going to take them down.”
Directed is also serializing all of its systems. “We can then police the sale of all products, both direct and distributor lines with enhanced teeth. Where our products are sold is vital to consumer satisfaction. The highly skilled professional installers at our brick and mortar 12-volt partners ensure the best possible consumer experience,” said Fontane.
Additionally, Directed is moving to ISP-based access for the Directechs Technical Support database to prevent unauthorized use. “Directechs is the gold standard for vehicle wiring diagrams,” said Struble. “We spend millions to provide this important benefit to our retailer partners. ISP-based access will allow us to provide the best information, give easy access to our dealers and eliminate unauthorized use. Having protected access to Directechs will again become a competitive advantage for our 12 Volt partners.”

Pairs with Directed DS4 Systems for A New Level of Vehicle Security
VISTA, Calif. (January 07, 2019) – Directed today announced a new connected dash camera, Viper SmartView, capable of pairing with Directed’s line of DS4 systems. SmartView builds on Directed’s long history of innovation in the aftermarket automotive industry and offers consumers a new level of vehicle security.
Viper SmartView provides monitoring solutions for consumers. It integrates several advanced technologies into a single product, including a 4G LTE-based, always-connected system; dual video cameras; telematicscapturing OBDII; WiFi and Bluetooth; GPS; displays; security system and motion sensors; and shareable video and media.
“SmartView sets the bar for in-vehicle dash cameras by adding smart features and DS4 connectivity to a fully-featured HD camera,” according to James Turner, SVP & GM, Remote Start and Security at Directed. “It’s another great addition to our growing DS4 infrastructure, but can also be used as standalone. However, the real power of SmartView is unleashed when connected to a DS4 security system. Consumers can immediately check out the interior and surroundings of their vehicle when they receive a security notification. It’s vehicle security for 2020 and beyond. Viper SmartView is perfect for both individuals and families.”
Viper SmartView not only records while the vehicle is in motion, but when paired with a DS4 system, will record when activated by a warn-away or full-trigger security event. This allows consumers to have peace of mind even when they aren’t near their vehicles. With Live Look, vehicle owners can take a look inside their vehicle at any time.
With built-in cellular connectivity, SmartView is capable of controlling DS4 systems as well as provides a built-in WiFi hotspot. SmartView also provides OBDII diagnosis and fault code reporting.
“The Viper SmartView provides next-generation features and connectivity, and we expect it to be a big hit with both our dealers as well as consumers,” said Bob Struble, CEO of Directed. “This solution builds on Directed’s legacy of innovation in the aftermarket.”

Vista, CA (July 28, 2017) – Directed announces that after months of testing and trials, the award-winning DS4 system is shipping to select VIPER dealers.
DS4 is meant to be an industry breakthrough that simplifies and improves the remote start and security experience for consumers, installers, and retailers for years to come.
The new DS4 Digital Systems feature four key technologies that are integrated into one single device. Remote start, security, interface, and Bluetooth® all work together seamlessly with the vehicle’s existing systems to enable a connected-car experience like no other, according to the company. DS4 utilizes the latest technology to radically streamline the installation process, provide extended consumer functionality and simplify inventory stocking and merchandising.
With DS4 comes DirectLink, a new proprietary wireless programming connection between the service technician and the system module in the vehicle via the integrated Bluetooth® technology, reducing errors and installation time. DS4 Digital Systems also provide FREE near-range smartphone control for consumers when paired with the FREE Directed SmartStart mobile app.
DS4 Digital Systems offer new features that likely will drive consumers into authorized retailers, and this configurable and expandable inventory reduces cost. DS4 provides faster installations which means more vehicles through the bay, increasing profits. The available and optional shock sensor/tilt sensor/temperature sensor allows DS4 Digital Systems to provide ultimate protection for the vehicle.
In the words of Directed CEO Bob Struble: “With DS4, we created, we innovated, and now we’re ready to bring this breakthrough new technology to market. We wanted to make sure we did the right thing and nailed the launch of this product. I’m proud to say that we began shipping to customers worldwide on Friday, July 28th.”
